There are variations to the sakhi relating to this Shabad. Some say, Guru Arjun Dev Ji heard Mata Ganga Ji bless her son, the child Hargobind Ji. Guru Ji then wrote this Shabad as Dhur Ki Bani to indicate the true blessings a mother should give her child.

Punjabi is a masculine language. It is common for folks in Punjab even nowadays, to call their daughter “putt urreh ayee” i.e. son come here, although it is addressed to a daughter. Thus, the asees contained in this Shabad applies to daughters as well too. Gurbani is gender friendly and applies to men and women equally unless the context states otherwise.

Remembering Him in meditation, all sins are erased and even one’s ancestors can be saved; so meditate continually upon the Lord who has no end or limitation.

“Jis simrat sabh kilvikh nassey pitri hoye udharo; so Har Har tum sadh ji japho ja ka antt na paro.”

Child, this is your mother’s hope and prayer; that you may never forget the Lord, even for an instant. May you always be in deep devotion upon the Lord of the Universe.

“Poota mata ki asees; nimakh na bisro tum ko Har Har sada bhajo jagdees.” (rahao).

May the Satguru (Shabad) be Merciful to you, by blessing you with love for Saintly company; may your clothes be your honor preserved by the Lord, and the singing of His Praises be your nourishment.

Satgur tum ko hoye dyala sant sang teri preet; kaparh patt Parmeshar rakhi bhojan kirtan neet.”

May you drink in Amrit and live eternally, and find Infinite delight in His remembrance; may all joys and revelments be yours and all your hopes fulfilled, and may you never be troubled by worries.

“Amrit pivho sada chir jivho Har simrat anand anantaa; rang tamasaa puran asaa kabhe na biapey chintaa.”

Let your mind be the bumble bee and let the Lord’s Feet (Bani) be the lotus flower; Nanak says may you attach your mind to Them as the chatrik blossoms forth upon drinking in the dew drop.

“Bhavar tumara eh mann hovho Har Charna hoho kaulaa; Nanak daas unn sang laptaeyo jio bundheh chatrik maulaa.”
