Raag Parbhati M.1

In the 1st Chaupada by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the rahao is

“Har bin jio jalh balh jaao…” (Ang 14).

In this Chaupada which is the final Shabad by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the rahao is

“Jal jaao jiwan Naam bina.”

It is the same Divine Teaching from beginning to the end i.e. Naam is central to our lives and we should take to Naam with love and devotion.

In this Shabad, Guru Ji tells us about the gurmukh who has spent his life reciting, reflecting upon Naam and has lived a glorious life guided by Naam.

He is the dust of the Saints Feet, (is humble), keeps Sadhsanggat and sings the Lord’s Praises which have carried him across; what can the terrified wretched torturer of death do to the gurmukh in whose heart resides the Lord, the Destroyer of ego?

“Santa ki rein Sadh jan sanggat Har kirat tar taari; kaha kare bapra jamm darpe gurmukh ridhay Murari.”

Without the Name of the Lord, life might just as well be burnt; the gurmukh savors the taste in his mind of reciting the Lord’s Name as on a rosary.

“Jal jaoo jiwan Naam bina; Har jap jaap japho japmali gurmukh aavhe saadh manaa.” (rahao).

Those who follow the Guru’s Teachings find True Peace, how can their glory be described?; the gurmukh seeks and finds the gems and jewels, diamonds rubies and treasures (of Naam).

“Gur updesh Sach sukh ja ko kya tis upma kahiye; laal jawehar rattan padarath khojat gurmukh lahiye.”

The gurmukh focusses his learning and meditation upon the True Wealth (of Naam) and lovingly attunes his mind to the Shabad of the One Lord; his thoughts remain absorbed in the Fearless, Immaculate, Indepedent Self Sufficient Lord.

“Chinne gyan dhyan dhan Sacho Eik Shabad liv laave; Niralambh Nirhar Nirbhao tarrhi laave.”

The seven seas are overflowing with Immaculate Waters (of Naam) and the inverted boat (of his consciousness is turned away from maya i.e.it has uprighted itself and now looks upwards towards God) now floats across (the world ocean; the mind which wandered in external distractions is now restrained and held in check and the gurmukh is intuitively absorbed in God.

“Syaer sapat bhare jal nirmal ultee naav tarave; bahar jato thaak rahave gurmukh sahaj samavhe.”

The gurmukh who recognizes his inner self is the true householder and the true renunciate; Nanak says, there is none other and his mind is appeased by the True Shabad.

“So girhee so daas udasee jin gurmukh aap pehchaniya; Nanak kahe avar nahi dujja Sach Shabad mann maaneiya.”
