Raag Maroo – Slok M.5 Maru Ki Vaar M.5.

In Gurbani we often come across lightning imagery. Lightning as we see in the physical world, is representative of maya. As at Angg 319, Guru Arjun Dev Ji tells us, worldly affairs are like flashes of lightning. The only inner flash which is pleasing is that which inspires one to meditate upon His Name.

“Daamni chamatkaar tiyo vartara jag khey; vath suhavi saye Nanak Naao japando Tis Dhani.”

The external lightning, although very bright, is very fleeting. The external moods of nature may be very pleasant and lightning may light up external forms for an instant, but only if there is great destiny upon you, that you merge into His Darshan within you.

“Upar banne akaas talay dhar sohtee; deh dis chamkay bijjal mukh ko johtee; khojat phiro bidesh Pio kat paaiyeh; Harihan je mastak hovay bhaag ta Daras samaaiyeh.” (Ang 1361).

As one closes his eyes, goes deep within himself with Shabad Guru Ji, if you are blessed, you will see streaks of lightning. These are Majestic “chalaks” (flashes) of His Jote. Only the Perfect Guru (Shabad) can show you these flashes.

Angg 1041.

“Niss daaman jio chamak chandayen dekhay; ahniss Jote nirantar pekhay; Anand Roop Anoop Sarupa Gur Puray dekhaeya.”

In this Slok, Guru Ji tells us of His Jote which flashes like lightning amongst the darkness of maya. The Amrit downpour from the clouds in the Daswa Dwar is heavy. Nanak says, the soul brides are exalted and in rapture upon meeting their Beloved.

“Nanak bijliya chamkan ghuran ghata att kaaliya; barsan megh apaar Nanak sangam Piri sohundiya.”
