Slok M.4 from Gauri Ki Vaar M.4.

Sikh history tells us that Bhai Gurdas Ji was sent to do Sikhi parchar at Agra. He was doing a wonderful job of spreading the Teachings of the Gurus and the joys of Naam.

One day a Sikh asked Bhai Ji to concisely describe the daily routine of a good Sikh. Bhai Gurdas Ji felt such an important question was best answered by Guru Ji himself.

Accordingly, Bhai Ji posed the question to Guru Ji and Guru Ramdas Ji wrote in reply.

One who calls himself a True Sikh of the Guru, should rise early in the morning, and meditate on the Lord’s Name; he should make effort to rise early in the morning, take a bath, cleanse himself, and bathe in the Pool of Nectar (i.e. he should recite Naam. The Guru’s Bani is the Pool of Nectar).

“Gur Satgur ka jo Sikh akhaaye so phalke uth Har Naam dhiaave; udham kare bhalke parbhati ishnaan kare Amrit Sar naave.”

As he recites the Teachings of the Gurus and chants the Name of the Lord, his sins, misdeeds, and evil shall be erased.

“Updesh Guru Har Har jap jaape sabh kilvikh paap dokh leh jaave.”

Then, as the sun rises, he is to sing Gurbani, whether sitting or standing, and he is to meditate upon the Lord’s Name.

“Firh chade divass Gurbani gaave bahendiya uthdeyia Har Naam dhiaave.”

(the missionary group which claims there is no need for Amrit Vela, should note Guru Ji clearly states here the Sikh has to awake early, recite Naam, do simran. Sunrise rises after that, clearly showing a lot has to be done by a Sikh before sunrise. That is clearly Amrit Vela).

One who lovingly remembers the Lord with every breath, and with every morsel of food, such a Gursikh becomes pleasing to the Guru’s Mind.

“Jo saas giraas dhiaaye mera Har Har so Gursikh Guru Mann bhaave.”

Upon whom my Master showers His Compassion, that Gursikh preaches the Guru’s Sermon to others.

“Jis nu Dyal hovay mera Suami tis Gursikh Gur Updesh sunaave.”

Servant Nanak yearns for the dust of the feet of that Gursikh who recites the Lord’s Name and inspires others to recite the Lord’s Name too.

“Jan Nanak dhurh maange tis Gursikh ki jo aap jappe avreh Naam japaave.”
