Raag Suhi

There are 2 Astpadhis by Guru Ramdas Ji in Raag Suhi.

The 1st Astpadhi (Ang 757), is a passionate plea for union with God within.

“Koyee aan milave mera Pritam pyara”.

In 32 padas drenched with love Guru Ji expresses the state of bairaag – yearning for union with the Divine.

Herein is from the 2nd Astpadhi (Ang 758) by Guru Ramdas Ji.

Here, the love of the jeev gets fulfillment. The Sikh expresses his feelings of Divine rapture and adoringly states some aspects of the Guru who made the union possible.

The Shabad starts with a declaration that the inner love for Bani, Guru, God was infused by Guru Ji/God Himself.

“Andar sacha neho laaya Pritam aapne.”

And having Darshan of the Guru, my body and mind are in ecstacy.

“Tan mann hoye nihaal ja Gur dekha samne.”

The Sikh says I have absolute faith in Naam. “Visaah” is translated sometimes as purchased. That is correct to as Bhagat Kabir Ji says.

“mann de Raam liya hai mol” (Ang 327).

This Amrit Naam of the Inaccesible Unfathomable Lord, I obtained from the Perfect Guru.

“Gur purey te paaya amrit aggam athah” (rahao).

Gazing upon the Satguru I blossom forth and I am in love with the Name of the Lord.

“Hao Satgur vekh vigasseya Har naame lagga pyar.”

By His Mercy He has united with me and led me to the Door of Salvation.

“Kirpa kar ke meliyan paaya mokh dwar”

The Sikh expresses his love for the amazing Guru in the rest of the Astpadhi. The Sikh adores his Guru who infused enlightenment and love for God within him.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
Deep within myself, I have enshrined true love for my Beloved.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ਜਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਾ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ॥੧॥
(ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਤਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
My body and soul are in ecstasy; I see my Guru before me. ||1||

ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
I have purchased the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਜੋ (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਬੜੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I have obtained the Inaccessible and Unfathomable Ambrosial Nectar from the Perfect Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਹਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।
Gazing upon the True Guru, I blossom forth in ecstasy; I am in love with the Name of the Lord.

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ।੨।
Through His Mercy, the Lord has united me with Himself, and I have found the Door of Salvation. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਭੇਟ ਰੱਖ ਦਿਆਂ
The True Guru is the Lover of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Meeting Him, I dedicate my body and mind to Him.

ਜੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਏਉ ॥੩॥
ਜੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਵਿਚ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੀ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੩।
And if it is so pre-ordained, then I shall automatically drink in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||

ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਲਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸੁੱਤੇ ਪਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉੱਠਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਾਂ
Praise the Guru while you are asleep, and call on the Guru while you are up.

ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਉ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਾ ਪਾਉ ॥੪॥
ਜੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਸੱਜਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਧੋਵਾਂ ।੪।
If only I could meet such a Gurmukh; I would wash His Feet. ||4||

ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਸਜਣੁ ਲੋੜਿ ਲਹੁ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਦੇਵੋ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
I long for such a Friend, to unite me with my Beloved.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੫॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
Meeting the True Guru, I have found the Lord. He has met me, easily and effortlessly. ||5||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ । ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂਘ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ
The True Guru is the Ocean of Virtue of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I have such a yearning to see Him!

ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਊ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥
ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਾਇਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦਾ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੬।
Without Him, I cannot live, even for an instant. If I do not see Him, I die. ||6||

ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਣੀਐ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਜਤਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਊਂਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤ ਭੀ ਜੀਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ,
As the fish cannot survive at all without water,

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ।੭।
the Saint cannot live without the Lord. Without the Lord’s Name, he dies. ||7||

ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਕਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਊ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I am so much in love with my True Guru! How could I even live without the Guru, O my mother?

ਮੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੮।
I have the Support of the Word of the Guru’s Bani. Attached to Gurbani, I survive. ||8||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਦੇਵੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨ (ਵਰਗਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ (ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ) ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ (ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is a jewel; by the Pleasure of His Will, the Guru has given it, O my mother.

ਮੈ ਧਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੯॥
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ । ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੯।
The True Name is my only Support. I remain lovingly absorbed in the Lord’s Name. ||9||

ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਦੇਇ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਇਕ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ
The wisdom of the Guru is the treasure of the Naam. The Guru implants and enshrines the Lord’s Name.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਲਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥੧੦॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਆ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧੦।
He alone receives it, he alone gets it, who comes and falls at the Guru’s Feet. ||10||

ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਆਖੈ ਆਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
If only someone would come and tell me the Unspoken Speech of the Love of my Beloved.

ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਮਨੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੧॥
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂ, ਲਿਫ਼ ਲਿਫ਼ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਢਹਿ ਪਵਾਂ ।੧੧।
I would dedicate my mind to him; I would bow down in humble respect, and fall at his feet. ||11||

ਸਜਣੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ (ਅਸਲ) ਸੱਜਣ ਹੈਂ । ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਸਭ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ
You are my only Friend, O my All-knowing, All-powerful Creator Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੀਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੧੨॥
ਮਿੱਤਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ । ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ ।੧੨।
You have brought me to meet with my True Guru. Forever and ever, You are my only strength. ||12||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਾਹ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ
My True Guru, forever and ever, does not come and go.

ਓਹੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੩॥
ਉਹ ਪੁਰਖ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ।੧੩।
He is the Imperishable Creator Lord; He is permeating and pervading among all. ||13||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਥਾਪਣਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਦਾ ਅਖੁੱਟ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
I have gathered in the wealth of the Lord’s Name. My facilities and faculties are intact, safe and sound.
