Raag Ramkali – Bhagat Kabir Ji.

There are millions of yogis still in India. They gather in large numbers during the kumbh mela and during eclipses of the moon and sun.

There were many yogis too during the times of the Gurus and Bhagats.

The yogis believed in breathing exercises, pranayams, assans, earrings (they believed if pierced at the right spot you hear anhad vajay), wearing a khintha (patched coat, each patch representing the conquest of some passion like anger, lust, greed).
Some kept maun, (silence), in the belief that it would unite them with Celestial Silence and avoid slander. The yogis carried wallets (choli) to save ashes; they carried begging bowls to put in food.

In this Shabad addressed to a yogi, Kabir Ji says in the rahao:

This is the way to achieve jog (union); be a gurmukh (i.e. take sharan of a Satguru) and you shall achieve all jap tap sanjam (through Naam).

“Aisaa jog kamavho jogi: jap tap sanjam gurmukh bhogi” (rahao).

Instead of external symbols like earrings, wallet and begging bowl, go inwards in meditation and practice compassion.

“Mundra maun dya kar choli patar ka karo bichaar re.”

Instead of a patched coat let your body (be patched out of evil passions), and let Naam be your support.

“Khintha eh tan siaoo apna naam karo adhaar.”

Apply the ashes of wisdom to your body and let your focussed consciousness be the horn you blow.

“Budh bhiboot charavho apni singi surat milayee.”

Become detached internally and travel within your body and play the sweet harp (of His Name) in your mind.

“Kar bairaag firho tan nagree man ki kinguree bajaiyee.”

Keep the essence of the five elements (fire, water, air, earth, space) enshrined in your heart and let your meditation be undisturbed.

“Panch tatt leh hirday rakho rahay niralam tarhee.”

Let righteous compassion be your garden.

“Kahat Kabir sunho re santho dharam dya kar barrhee.”
