A Sikh has a deep look at himself. He is horrified. I have sinned so much and made no efforts to cleanse myself.

He pleads with the Guru. Now, please tell me what efforts should I make?; to dispel the anxieties of my mind; how can I cross over the terrifying world ocean?

“Ab mai kaun upaav karo; jeh bidh mann ko sansaa chukay bhao nidh paar parho.” (rahao).

Obtaining this human life I have done no good deeds; this makes me very afraid; in thought, word and deed, I have not sung the Lord’s Praises; this thought troubles my mind.

“Janam bhae kach bhalo na kinno ta te adhek darho; mann bach karam Har gunn nahi gaaye yeh jee soch dharo.”

I did listen to the Guru’s Teachings, but no wisdom welled up within me. I fill my belly like a beast.

“Gurmatt sunn kach gyan na upjiyo pas jio udhar bharo.”

Nanak says, only if the Lord uses His Innate Nature (of helping sinners – (Ang 784) patit paavan Har birdh sadaye…”), can a sinner like me be saved.

“Kaho Nanak Har birdh pechano tab hao patit tarho.”
