Raag Suhi M.1

Guru Ji addresses someone who claims to be wise and knowledgeable. There are many such persons in the world who spout words of wisdom but do not practice what they preach. They criticise every maryada, tradition, and conduct of others, and use dry logic to win their arguments.

Guru Ji says one should sincerely engage in sewa of God, and practice what you preach.

Firstly, Guru Ji says, one should be focussed on God within himself and not search for Him outside; (if you look for Him outside), the question arises why you have renounced Ambrosia and are now eating poison (of worldliness)?

“Antar vassey na bahar jaaye; Amrit chodh kahe bhikh khaaye.”

One should only recite such spiritual wisdom (to seek Him within); and become a slave of the True (Eternal) Lord. (everything outside that you see, is perishable).

“Aisaa Gyan Japho mann mere; hovho chakar Sache kere.” (rahao).

Everyone spouts wisdom and speaks of meditation; the entire world wanders about in such bondages and confusion.

“Gyan dhyan sabh koyee raveh; bandhan bandhiya sabh jag bhaveh.”

Only if one truly serves the Lord, is he a true servant; this Lord pervades the waters, lands and skies.

“Sewa kare so chakar hoye; jal thall mahiyal rev rehiya soye.”

(Only if one regards himself) I am not good, and no one is bad; Nanak declares, He ferries that person across.

“Ham nahi changay bura nahi koye; pranvat Nanak tarey soye.”
