The Janamsakhis say Bhai Lehna Ji met Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Kartarpur.
One morning Bhai Lehna Ji heard Bhai Jodh Ram reciting a Shabad written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It was the 21st pauri of Asa Ki Vaar.

It said you should always serve such a Master who gives you peace.

“Jit seviye sukh paiyeh so Sahib sada samaliyeh.”

Why do evil deeds that you shall have to suffer so?.

“Jit kita paiyeh apna sa ghaal buri kyo ghaaliyeh.”

Do not do evil at all. Look ahead at the future with foresight.

“Manda mool na kichiye de lammi nadar nihaliye.”

Throw the dice (of the game of your life) in such a way that you do not lose with your Lord and Master.

“Jio Sahib naal na hariye teveha passa dhaaliye.”

Do only deeds that bring you (spiritual) profit.

“Kich laahe upar ghaaliye.”

The Shabad so touched Bhai Lehna Ji that he yearned to meet the Master who had written such amazing Gurbani.

Some time later he mounted his horse and rode towards Kartarpur. As he neared the settlement, he met a kindly farmer who held the reins of the horse and led him to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s house. (This would be in 1532 as Bhai Lehna Ji stayed with Guru Nanak Dev Ji for about 7 years before Guru Ji Joti Jote in 1539).

After freshening himself, Bhai Lehna Ji waited to see Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Some others had gathered too and Bhai Lehna was told every evening Satsang took place.

Bhai Lehna Ji was stunned to note that the kindly farmer he had met was none other than the Great Guru Himself.

In the Shabad Arth we have a note to this Shabad which says “eh Shabad Guru Nanak Sahib Ji ne Bhai Lehna Ji nu oss veley sunaiya jadh oh Guru Ji nu pehla pehel milay.”

The Shabad says it is time (i.e. this human life) to meet the Lord and one should surrender mind body and spirit to the Satguru. The Satguru leads you on the journey correcting you, blessing you and finally leads to Union with God within your own body.

Listen O my mind, my friend, now is the time to meet the Lord; so long as there is vitality and breath in your body, give this body to Him; without virtues, this body is useless and will crumble into a pile of dust.

“Sunn mann mittar pyarea mil vela hai eh; jab lag joban saas hai tab lag eh tann deh; bin gunn kaam na aavaiyee dheh dheri tann kheh.”

O my mind earn profits and return home. (although Guru Nanak Ji is speaking about returning to your nijhi ghar with profits, in the context of address to Bhai Lehna Ji, it was prophetic. Bhai Lehna Ji returned with the best possible profit – as the 2nd Satguru Ji on the Gurgaddi founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji);as a gurmukh sing Praises of Naam and burn off your ego.

“Mere mann le laha ghar jaaye; gurmukh Naam salahiye haumai nivri bhae.”(rahao).

Again and again we hear and tell stories, read and write and load ourselves with (worldly) knowledge; (the result on the jeev is) night and day greed increases, ego wells up and we fall prey to vices; (in contrast, the One you seek) He is Carefree              (Independent i.e. cannot be found by mere knowledge, reading or writing), beyond weighing, and can only be accessed through the Guru’s Wisdom (Teachings, Gurbani).

“Sunn sunn gandhan gandhiye likh parh bujhe paar; trishna ahniss aglee haumai rogh vikaar; Oh Veparvah Atolva Gurmatt keemat saar.”

One may indulge in thousands of clever tricks and enjoy the company and adoration of thousands; still, without the company of the Saint (Guru) you will never receive satisfaction and without Naam, you will endure pain and misery; the soul gets release by chanting the Name of the Lord as the gurmukh reflects upon his inner self.

“Lakh sianap je kari lakh seyo preet milaap; bin sanggat Sadh na dhrapiya bin Naave dukh santaap; Har japp jiarey chutiye gurmukh chinnay aap.”

(A Sikh should commit himself thus).

I have sold my mind and body to the Guru and surrendered my thoughts together with my head; I searched for Him in the three worlds (entire Universe); Nanak says, the Satgur blessed me with Union, and I found the Lord was always with me.

“Tann mann Gur pe vechiya mann diya sirr naal; tribhavan khoj dhandoliya gurmukh khoj nihaal; Satgur mel milaiya Nanak so Prabh naal.”
