Raag Assa M.5.

A jeev isteri who has been blessed by the Guru, describes her spiritual experiences. Guru Ji uses a lot of Sadh Bhasha (literally Saint Speak) in this Shabad. It contains imagery used by Saints. The outer relationships of a family are within us too. Maya for example is referred to as “sass”, mother in law.

Although most imageries are used consistently, in certain contexts, the imageries can mean different things. Guru Arjun Dev Ji has used this imagery of mother-in-law, father-in-law, elder brother of husband etc., extensively in Ramkali Ki Vaar M.5. Bhagat Kabir Ji too has used such imagery in a number of Shabads.

My Beloved distanced me from my mother-in-law (maya); hope and desire (my younger brother-in-law and sister-in-law), died of grief (as I left them); I no longer fear death (my elder brother-in-law); I am protected by my All Knowing, Wise Beloved.
(my translation of the first line is very different from the version found on the net).

“Sassu te Pir kinni vaakh; der jethani muyi dukh santap; ghar ke jitharey ki chuki kaan; Pir rakhiya kinni Sugharh Sujaan.”

Listen O people, I have tasted the elixir of the Lord’s Love (Naam); the evil ones are dead, my enemies destroyed. The True Guru (Shabad) has blessed me with the Name (Attributes) of the Lord.

“Sunho logha mai prem rass paiyaa; durjan marey vairi sangarey Satgur mo ko Har Naam divaeiya.” (rahao).

Firstly, I renounced all joys of ego; secondly I renounced the ways of the world; renouncing the three qualities (of maya), I now look alike at friend and foe; the fourth state of bliss was revealed to me by the Saint (Guru).

“Prithme tyaagi haumai preet; dutiya tyaagi logha reet; tria gunn tyaag durjan meet samaane; turiya gunn mil Sadh pehchane.”

In the cave of Celestial Peace I have secured a firm seat; the Unstruck Melody resounds from His Divine Light; I am in great ecstacy reflecting upon the Guru’s Word; drenched with Love for God, I am a happy blessed soul bride.

“Sahaj gufa meh aasan bandhiya; Jote Saroop Anahad vajeiya; maha anand Gur Shabad vichaar; Pria seyo ratti dhan Suhagan naar.”

Servant Nanak expresses the Wisdom of the Lord; one who listens and practices (such expressed wisdom), will be carried across and saved; he shall not be born nor die, nor come and go; he shall remain absorbed/blended in the Lord.

“Jan Nanak bolay Brahm bichaar; jo sunne kamaave so utray paar; janam na marey na aave na jaaye; Har seti oh rahey samaaye.”
