Raag Gauree – Sukhmani Sahib.

In the 20th Astpadhi, the Sikh pleads with the Guru and says please give me bhagti.

“Firat firat Prabh aaya bhareya Tau Sharnaye; Nanak ki Prabh benti Apni bhagti laaye.”

In response to this plea, the Guru gives advice to the Sikh as to how bhagti is obtained and practised.

In the 4th pada of this 20th Astpadhi, Guru Ji poses some questions to the Sikh.

Why ever forget Him who does not overlook any effort? (made to reach Him); why ever forget Him who knows everything we do?; why ever forget Him who gives us everything?; why ever forget Him who is the life force for all living beings?; why ever forget Him who preserves us in the fire of the womb?; but it is a rare one who, with the Guru’s Grace, realises all this.

“So kyo bisrey je ghaal na bhaane; so kyo bisrey ke kiya jaane; so kyo bisrey jin sabh kich diya; so kyo bisrey je jeevan jiaa; so kyo bisrey je aggan me rakhey; Gur Parsad ko birla lakhey.”

Why ever forget Him who lifts you out of the poison of maya?; and unites with Himself those who have been separated from Him for countless lifetimes?; through the Perfect Guru (Shabad), this Essence of Reality is known; servant Nanak worships the Lord within himself.

“So kyo bisrey je bikh te kaddey; janam janam ka toota ghaandey; Gur Purey tatt eihay bujhaiyaa; Prabh apna Nanak jann dhiaeyaa.”
