Raag Maroo (Maru) M.1

Guru Ji tells of his blissful existence as a slave of God. Slavery in the world is regarded as oppressive and depriving the poor slave of his dignity and self esteem as a human. But, being a slave of God is a blessed living. Being a slave of God means one lives in utter humility in His Presence, and follows the Hukam of his Master in every aspect of his life.

I am Your slave, sold to You, for a price (eternal salvation, and being in God’s Presence always), and I go by the name of “fortunate one”; I was sold at the Guru’s Shop (Sharan), to the Guru’s Word (Bani, Naam) and whatever task You link me to, I do.

“Molh kharidi lalla golla mera naoo Subhaga; Gur ki Bachni Haat bikanaa jit laaiya tit laaga.”

What cleverness can Your slave try with You?; O my Master, I find it difficult to carry out Your Hukam (because it is so tough – ” Bhikham Tera hai Bhana” – Ang 1185).

“Tere lalle kya chaturayee; Sahib ka Hukam na karna jayee.” (rahao).

The next line has to be understood in the context of “mata matt pita satokh.” Being parents, there is union between them. “Saha sanjogh vivah vijogh.” (union with the Lord is on a blessed date, and marriage to the Lord is detachment from the world). Such a Union leads to a child of Truth.
“Sach santatt kaho Nanak Jogh.” (Ang 151). Actually these are the Union of various Attributes of God.

My mother (matt) is Your slave, my father (santokh) is Your slave, and I am a child of Your slaves; my slave mother (matt) dances (to Your Commands), and my slave father (santokh) sings Your Praises, and I engage in devotional worship to You, O Sovereign Lord.

“maa laali pio lalla mera hao laale ka jaaiya; laali naache laala gaavhe bhagat karo Teri Raaiya.”

(Since You are the Real Relisher of everything I eat or drink – “Aape Rassiya Aap Rass Aape Raavanhar” (Ang 23), if You wish to drink, then I shall fetch water for You, O Rich Master, if You wish to eat, I shall grind the corn for You; I am happy to wave the fan over You, massage Your Feet, and to continuously chant Your Name.

“Piyeh ta paani aani Meera khahe ta pissan jaao; pakha pheri Pair malovha japatt raha Tera Naao.”

I have been untrue to the salt I eat from You (I have broken Your Hukam, I am fallible), but Nanak remains Your slave, if You Forgive Him, it is Your Greatness; since the beginning of time, throughout the ages, You have always been the Merciful and Generous Lord, without You, none can achieve salvation.

“Loon harami Nanak laala Bakshe Tudh Vadiaaiye; aad jugaad Dyapatt Dataa Tudh bin mukat na payee.
