A Sikh who has endured a lot realises now that only Naam can save him. He lists out the blessings which come with Naam and at the same time tells of the miseries one must endure if you do not take to Naam.

Please meet me O Lord and bless me with Your Name; without Naam, all other loves lead to miseries and are accursed.

“Mil mere Gobind Apna Naam deho; Naam bina dhrig dhrig asneho.” (rahao).

One who eats and dresses well without gratitude to Naam, is akin to a dog who puts his snout in to eat impure foods.

“Naam bina jo pahrey khaaye; jio kookar juthan me paaye.”

Without Naam all occupations are useless, like decorations on a corpse.

“Naam bina jeta biohaar; jio mirtak mithiya shingaar.”

One who forgets Naam and indulges in pleasures finds no peace even in dreams, and his body gets diseased.

“Naam bina kare rass bhog; sukh supne nahi tann me rogh.”

One who renounces Naam and engages in other methods, shall see all his false pretences fall away.

“Naam tyaag kare ann kaaj; binass jaye jhuthe sabh paaj.”

One whose mind does not enshrine love for Naam, goes to hell although he may perform millions of rituals.

“Naam sang mann preet na laave; kote karam karte narak jaave.”

One who does not worship the Name in his mind is bound like a thief, and taken to the city of the dead.

“Har ka Naam jin mann na aradha; chor ki niyayee jamm pur bandha.”

Hundreds of thousands of ostentatious shows and great expanses, without Naam, all these are false.

“Lakh adambar bahut bishtara; Naam bina jhuthe pasaara.”

Nanak says, only that humble being truly takes the Name of the Lord, whom the Lord blesses in His Mercy.

“Har ka Naam soyee jann leh; kar kirpa Nanak jis deh.”
