SGGS Angg 2

The Immortal, Divine, Japji Sahib Ji.

This is pauri no.4

Guru Ji starts pauri no. 4 by telling us the Lord is True (Eternal, Perfect), so is His Name (Attributes), which should be recited with Infinite (Unrestrained – Gurbani also uses the word “nisangg”) love; people use these Names to plead and request Gifts from Him, and the Great Giver continuously bestows His Gifts.

“Sacha Sahib Sach Nayee bhakhiya bhao apaar; aakhe mange deh deh daat kare Dataar.”

(Apart from merely asking for His Gifts), If we then desire to have sight of His Royal Court, what offering can we place before Him? ( to win His Favour); and what words do we speak to which He would listen, and His love might be invoked?.

“Ferh ke agge rakhiye jit dissay Darbar; moho ke bollan boliye jit sunn dhare Pyar.”

Guru Ji replies the questions posed in the above two lines by telling us, we should awake at the ambrosial hours (normally taken to be 2-3 hours before sunrise), recite His True Name, Praise Him, and reflect upon His Glorious Greatness.

“Amrit vela Sach Naoo vadiaiyee vichaar.”

Guru Ji then tells us whatever we do, we get clothed by our actions (lekhas), and we can only get liberation (from these karmic clothes) by His Glance of Grace. (i.e. you cannot get release from karmas by doing further karmas. Only His Grace, given in His Absolute Will, can give you release. As to what Scale He uses (“Aape kanda Aap Taraji Aape Tolanhara”), or reason He exercises His Bhana, we are told in pauri no. 25 “Bandh khalasee bhane hoye horh aakh na sakay koye.”).

Nanak says, know this well – in every aspect of life, The True One Himself (is the Doer and the Deed).

“Nanak evay jaaniye sabh Aape Sachiaar.”
