Guru Ji describes the bairaag avastha, a state where the Sikh pines for Darshan and Union with Guru/God. It is a yearning full of love and he is prepared to do anything which will lead to Union.

The Lord, Destroyer of demons, is my mind, body and my very breath of life; I do not know of any other besides the Lord; if only I had the good fortune to meet some friendly Saint (Guru), he would show me the way to my Beloved, Lord God.

“Madhusudhan mere mann tann prana; hao Har bin dujja avar na jaana; koyee Sant Sajjan milhe vadhbhagee mai Har Prabh Pyara dasse jio.”

I have searched my mind and body through and through; how can I meet my Darling Beloved O my mother?; I joined the Satsanggat and asked about the Path to God, and was told He resides in the Satsanggat itself.

“Hao mann tann khoji bhaal bhalaayi; kyo Pyara Pritam milhe meri maayi; mil Satsanggat khoj dasaayi vich Sanggat Har Prabh vasse jio.”

My Darling Beloved True Guru (Shabad) is my Protector; (I plead with Him) I am a helpless child please give me Your loving care; the Guru, the Perfect Guru (Shabad) is my Father and Mother. Obtaining the Water (Naam) from the Guru, my heart lotus blossoms forth.

“Mera Pyara Pritam Satgur Rakhvala; ham barik deen karo pritpalaa; mera Maat Pita Gur Satgur Pura Gur Jal mil kamal vigsay jio.”

Without seeing my Guru, sleep does not come to me; my mind and body are afflicted with the pain of separation from my Guru; Nanak says, O Lord, show Mercy to me that I might meet the Guru (Shabad) and blossom forth.

“Mai bin Gur dekhay neend na aave; mere mann tann vedhan Gur birho lagaave; Har Har Dya karo Gur melho jan Nanak Gur mil rahase jio.”
