Raag Gauree

This Slok appears twice. Once at the beginning of Bavan Akhri M.5, and at the conclusion of the said Bani.

The essence of the Slok is a salutation to the All Powerful Gurdev (Shabad), who is Perfect in all aspects.

The Divine Guru is my Mother and Father. He is the my Lord and Master; the Divine Guru is my Companion, my Relative and my Brother, the Destroyer of Ignorance.

“Gurdev Mata Gurdev Pita Gurdev Suami Parmeshara; Gurdev Sakha Agyan Bhanjan Gurdev Bandap Sahodra.”

(Sahodra is a combination of “sah” (one)- “odar” (stomach, womb), i.e. from One Source i.e. the Guru, and all of us are from One God).

The Divine Guru is the Giver who Preaches the Lord’s Name, and is a Mantra that never fails; the Divine Guru is the Image of Peace, Truth and Wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher’s Stone, touching it one is transformed.

“Gurdev Data Har Naam Updasey Gurdev Mant Nirodra; Gurdev Shaant Sat Budh Murat Gurdev Paras Parss Praa.”

(Many read mantras to attract all kinds of energies. These are all energies of maya.

The Guru (Naam) is however Nirodar Mantra, i.e. an Infallible Mantra. This Mantra leads you towards God, and once it is accepted in His Court, no one can break or overturn this Mantra. He can however use His Birdh to do anything He chooses).

The Divine Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Pool of Amrit. Bathing in the Guru’s Wisdom, one experiences Infinite Enlightenment; the Divine Guru is the Creator, the Destroyer of sins, and the Purifier of sinners.

“Gurdev Tirath Amrit Sarovar Gur Gyan Majjan Apramparaa; Gurdev Karta Sabh paap harta Gurdev patit pavit kraa.”

The Divine Guru is from the Primal Beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age, the Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord’s Name, reciting which, one can be saved; God, be Merciful to me and place me in the Company of the Divine Guru. A foolish sinner like me can hold onto Him, and go across; the Divine Guru is the Perfect Guru, the Supreme Lord God Himself. Nanak respectfully bows to Him.

“Gurdev aad jugaad jug jug Gurdev mant Har japp udraa; Gurdev sanggat Prabh melh kar kirpa ham murh paapi jit lagg traa; Gurdev Satgur Parbrahm Parmeshvar Gurdev Nanak Har namaskaraa.”
