Sikh tradition says that Guru Ramdas Ji told his youngest son Arjun Dev to go to Lahore. Guru Ji’s cousin Bhai Sahari Mal was getting his son married and Arjun Dev Ji (not Guru yet), was to attend the festivities and await instructions from Guru Ji when he was to return.
There was a gurdwara at Chuna Mandi, Lahore, where the festivities took place. It has been abandoned and is occupied by some Pakistani families now.

A long time elapsed, but there was no news requesting his return. Arjun Dev Ji wrote 3 letters but they were intercepted by Prithi Chand.
The 4th letter reached Guru Ji, who sent for Arjun Dev Ji’s immediate return.

It is said that when Guru Arjun Dev Ji became Guru, these letters were given the form of a Shabad, and the signature, Nanak appended to the Shabad.

The sakhi aside, the Shabad is a very passionate yearning by a Sikh for Darshan of his Guru.

My mind longs for the blessed Darshan of my Guru; it cries out like a thirsty chatrik; my thirst cannot be quenched, and I find no peace, without the Blessed Vision of the Saint (Guru).

“Mera mann lochay Gur Darshan taee; bilapp kare chatrik ki niayee; trikha na utray shaant na aave bin Darshan Sant pyare jio.”

I am a sacrifice to the Beloved Darshan of the Saint Guru.

“Hao gholi jio ghol ghumayee Gur Darshan Sant pyare jio.” (rahao).

Your Face (Shabad) is so Beautiful and the Sound of Your Words imparts intuitive inner wisdom; it has been a long time since I saw the Cherisher of the world; blessed is that Place where You dwell O my Friend, Divine Guru.

“Tera mukh suhava jio sahaj dhun Bani; chir hova dekhay Sarangpani; dhan so des jaha Tu vaseya mere Sajjan Meet Murarey Jio.”

I am a sacrifice to my Friend, the Divine Guru.

“Hao gholi hao ghol ghumayee Gur Sajjan Meet Murarey Jio.”(rahao)

When I do not meet with You even for a moment, it is a dark age of miseries upon me; when will I meet You, O my Beloved Lord?; I cannot endure the night, and sleep does not come without sight of the Beloved Guru’s Court.

“Ek ghari na miltay ta kaljug hota; hun kadh miliye Pria Tudh Bhagvanta; mohe rehn na vihave neend na aave bin dekhe Gur Darbarey Jio.”

I am a sacrifice to the Court of the True Guru.

“Hao gholi jio ghol ghumayee tis Sache Gur Darbarey Jio.” (rahao).

By good fortune I have met the Saint Guru; I have met the Immortal Lord within the home of my inner self; I serve You every moment that I never be separated from You even for an instant. Servant Nanak is Your slave, O Beloved Master.

“Bhaag hova Gur Sant milayaa; Prabh Abhinasee ghar me payaa; sev kari pal chasaa na vichraa jann Nanak daas Tumare Jio.”

I am a sacrifice to You Lord. Servant Nanak is Your slave.

“Hao gholi jio ghol ghumayee jann Nanak daas Tumare Jio.” (rahao).
