Raag Basant M.1

Guru Ji is telling us about the inner Spring Season. It is Eternal “sada” unlike the outer basant season which lasts for about two months.

Guru Ji is describing the avastha of a gurmukh who has received Gur Parsad.

Among all months the most blessed is the month where the Eternal Spring Season abides within you.

“Maha mah mumarkhee chadiya sada Basant.”

The inner liv is now aware, and tells itself to blossom forth (i.e. to viggas, be in kheda) and to cherish the Name of the Lord always.

“Parfarh chit samaal Soye sada sada Gobind.”

For this inner Spring Season to arise, one has to eradicate all ego. And one has to imbibe His Gunn (Naam, Attributes), reflect upon Them, and keep them gathered within.

Thus in the rahao, Guru Ji tells the Sikh, O simple person, remove your egotistical intellect; subdue your ego, contemplate on Him in your mind, and gather in the Sublime Virtues of the Lord.

“Bholiya haumai surat visaar; haumai maar bichaar mann me Gunn vich Gunn le saar.” (rahao)

Everything is lush and green during the outer spring season. Taking the imagery of Eternal Freshness and Luscious Greenery further, Guru Ji says,
His Grace is the Tree, whilst His Name are the branches, faith (belief in Naam, God) are the flowers and the fruit is Spiritual Enlightenment (Wisdom); Realization of the Lord provides thick Protective Shade from the leaves, and the ego of the mind is eradicated (as Realization sets in).

“Karam Pedh Sakha Hari Dharam Fulh Falh Gyaan; Patt Parapatt Chhav Ghaani chuka mann abhimaan.”

With the physical body one’s actions should be to see the Lord in all Kudrat (all nature), the ears should listen to Gurbani, and the mouth should recite the True Name; as you lovingly focus on the Lord, you will attain to the Perfect Wealth of Spiritual Honor.

Akhi Kudrat kanni Bani mukh aakhan Sach Naam; Patt ka dhan Pura hova laaga Sahaj Dhyaan.”

The months and seasons come depending on how He chooses to Observe and Appraise your actions; Nanak says, the gurmukhs who remain absorbed in the Lord do not ever wither away – they remain Green (Ever Fresh) forever.

“Maha rutti aavna vekho karam kamaaiye; Nanak Harey na sukaiye je gurmukh rahe samaaiye.”
