Slok M.4

In SGGS Ji we find lots of farming imagery. Starting with Japji Sahib for example – “aape beej aape hi khaao.”
Gurbani is speaking largely of karmic seeds planted by us. But on a physical level, the words hold true for the farmer and his land too. In this Slok, Guru Ji is stressing about the planting of karmic seeds and farming we do in our bodies.

All (body) fields belong to God, and He Himself leads you to cultivation; the gurmukh receives His Grace and grows his crops (of Naam), the manmukh loses even his capital (i.e. he leads a wasted life).

“Har Prabh ka sabh khet hai Har Aap kirsaani laaya; gurmukh baksh jammayen manmukhi mool gavaaeya.”

All engage in planting in their own interests, but that field flourishes with which the Lord is Pleased; the gursikh plants the seed of the Lord’s Ambrosial Nectar, and receives the fruit of Amrit Naam.

“Sabh ko bijjay apne bhale no Har bhaave so khet jamaaeya; gursikhi Har Amrit bijiya Har Amrit Naam falh Amrit paaeya.”

The mouse of death (and miseries) gnaws continually at the crop, but the Lord beats it and drives it away; where there is love for God, the cultivation is successful, and in His Grace a huge amount of produce is received.

“Jamm chuha kirss nit kurkada Har Karte maar kadaeiya; kirsani jammi bhao kar Har bohl baksh jamaaeya.”

Those who have meditated upon the Primal Being, the Satguru (Shabad), all their sorrows and burning worries are removed; servant Nanak says, one who adores and worships the Naam, saves himself and ferries the world across too.

“Tin ka karha andesa sabh lahiyon jinni Satguru Purakh dhiaaeya; jan Nanak Naam aradhiya aap tareiya sabh jagat taraaeiya.”
