Raag Sri Raag M.5

Guru Ji tells us about man’s transient stay in this world. During the rainy season, it is a chore to take the herd to pasture lands which are quite far away. So, it is common for herdsmen to set up a temporary hut at pasture lands. As the rains subside, the herd is driven back to the home, and the hut is abandoned. That hut is known as goyal, and the herdsman as goyali.

Guru Ji says the herdsman comes to the temporary hut (of his body) and what good are his ostentatious displays?. (for such a short space of time); when the allotted time is up you must depart, it is best you take care of your real (inner) hearth and home.

“Goyal aaya goyali kya tis danff pasaar; mohlatt punni chalna tu samall ghar bahr.”

O my mind sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord and serve the True Guru with love; why do you take pride in trivial matters?.

“Har Gunn gavho manna Satgur sev pyar; kya thodadi baat gumaan.” (rahao).

Like an overnight guest you shall arise and depart in the morning; why are you so engrossed in your household?. It is like a garden of flowers (bloom for a short while, give fragrance which cannot be grasped, and will wilt in a few days).

“Jaise rein paruahne uth chalse parbaat; kya tu ratta garist seyo sabh phulla ki bagaat.”

Why do you go around saying “mine, mine?”. Yearn for the Lord who has given it to you; it is certain that you must arise and depart leaving behind your hundreds and thousands and millions.

“Meri meri kya kare jin diya so Prabh lorh; sarpar uthi chalna chadh jaasi lakh karorh.”

Wandering through 8.4 million incarnations, you have now obtained this very precious life; Nanak says, remember His Naam, your day for departure draws near.

“Lakh chaurasi bhramteiya dulabh janam paaiyoeh; Nanak Naam samaal tu so din nerha aaiyoeh.”
