Raag Sorath M.4

Guru Ji tells us about the blessings Naam gives to the gurmukhs, and the miseries of those who forsake Naam.

The inner depths of my mind are pierced by love for the Lord, I cannot live without Him; just as the fish dies without water, so do I die without the Lord’s Name.

“Har seyo preet antar mann bediya Har bin rehan na jaaye; jio machli bin niray binsay tio Naame bin mar jayee.”

O Lord, please bless me with the Rejuvenating Water of Your Name; day and night I beg for Your Name deep within myself, through the Name I find peace.

“Mere Prabh kirpa jal devho Har Nayee; hao antar Naam mangaa din ratee Naame hi shaant payee.” (rahao).

Just as the (legendary) chatrik cries out for dewdrops as it’s thirst cannot be quenched without water; the gurmukh gets blessed to receive the Water of His Name, and is rejuvenated through the Love of the Lord.

“Jio chatrik jal bin billaway bin jal pyaas na jayee; gurmukh jal paave sukh sahaje hariya bhai subhaiyee.”

The manmukh is always hungry (for maya), wanders about in ten directions, and without Naam he suffers pain; he is born to die (in vain) and enters into reincarnation and receives punishment from the Lord’s Court.

“Manmukh bhukhay deh dis dollay bin Naave dukh payee; janam marey fir johni aave Dargeh milhe sajayee.”

But if the Lord showers His Mercy, one sings His Praises, and enjoys the Sublime Essence deep within himself; Nanak says the Lord has been Merciful to the wretched, and all fires of greed (for maya) have been doused by the Shabad.

“Kirpa kare ta Har gunn gaavhe Har rass antar payee; Nanak deen Dyaal bhaye hai trishna Shabad bujhaiyee.”
