A Sikh finds he is distanced from the Guru, and nothing works for him. He realises he is engrossed in maya, and pleads to the Guru for help. The Guru advises him.

The Sikh says I am blind, totally blind and entangled in poison (of maya), how can I walk on the Guru’s Path? (To free myself from blindness and bondages); I pray the Satguru in His Mercy, attaches me with the Hem of His Robe. (The Satguru is clothed in Naam. To attach to the Hem of His Robe would be to attach with Naam/Bani from the Satguru).

“Ham andhulay andh bikh ratey kyo chaley Gur chali; Satgur Dya kare Sukhdata ham laave aapan paali.”

In response to the plea by the Sikh, the Guru replies:

O Gursikh, my friend, walk on the Guru’s Path (follow my Teachings/Bani); whatever is said by the Guru (Shabad), accept it as good; Know that the Sermon of the Lord is unique and wonderful.

“Gursikh meet chalo Gur chaali; jo Gur kahe soyee bhal maano Har Har katha niraali.” (rahao).

As one begins to walk on the Guru’s Path, the Guru now addresses them as Saints, and tells them to engage themselves quickly in sewa of the Guru; by this sewa, prepare provisions for the journey (towards Union), as you do not know when death may strike, today or tomorrow.

“Har ke Sant sunho jan bhai Gur sevio begh beghali; Satgur sev kharch Har bandho mat janho ajj ke kaali.”

Apart from sewa, the Guru says His Saints must also recite the Lord’s Name, and walk in harmony with His Hukam; those who recite His Name, become like the Lord Himself, and He Meets and Sports with them.

“Har ke Sant japho Har japna Har Sant chale Har naali; jin Har seviya se Har hoye Har miliya kelh kelali.”

After such loving Divine Advice from the Guru, the Shabad concludes with the Sikh doing ardas.

I have a great desire to chant Your Name, Lord, please Grant me Your Grace, O Lord of all forests; servant Nanak pleads to be in holy company, and to be the dust of the feet of Your Saints (Gurus).

“Har Har jappan jap loch lochani Har kirpa kar Banwali; jan Nanak sanggat Sadh Har melho ham Sadh janna pagh raali.”
