Raag Gauree – Astpadhi 17 Sukhmani Sahib.

In Astpadhi 14, we are told that it is pointless to rely upon humans. Rely only upon God as He is the Sole Giver.

“Manukh ki tek birthee sabh jaan; devan ko Ekay Bhagvaan.”

In Astpadi 15, Guru Ji stresses it is our inner liv which is broken from God. As we mentally distance ourselves from Him, we suffer all kinds of miseries and distress. Thus we are advised to pray to God who can rejoin our liv with Him.

“Tutee Gandanhaar Gopal; sarab jeea Aape Pritpaal.”

In Astpadhi 16, Guru Ji stresses this Lord with whom we seek to Unite with is Formless, and by His Grace, He can give you Enlightenment.

“Roop na rekh na rang kich treh gunn te Prabh bhinn; tisse bujhave Nanaka jis hovay Suparsan.”

Astpadhi 17 tells us this Lord is True and beyond time and space, and resides within us. If we enshrine total faith in Him as a sewak, we get blessed to understand that He is the Real Doer.

“Sat Saroop riday jinn maaneya; Karan Karavan tinn mool pechaneya.”

This is the final (8th) pada of this Astpadhi 17. This pada stresses our Ote (focus, support) should only be upon Guru/God.

After such a fascinating background, Guru Ji leads us to the need for the Sharan of a Satguru in Astpadhi 18.

In Astpadhi 19, the Satguru advises the Sikh about the futile chase for maya. He should focus on the Wealth of Naam.

“Saath na chalay bin bhajan bikhiya saglee shaar; Har Har Naam kamaavna Nanak eh Dhan saar.”

In Astpadhi 20, taking the advice of the Satguru to heart, the Sikh pleads for bhagti.

“Firat firat Prabh aaya bhareya tau Sarnaaye; Nanak ki Prabh bentee Aapni bhagti laaye.”

In Astpadhi 21, the Satguru enlightens the Sikh about pre Creation – the Sunn Samadh State, and post Creation – where maya obstructs us in various ways from connecting with God.

Astpadhi 22 is a general summing up of the teachings so far in Sukhmani Sahib, and a reassurance that so long as you keep to Naam, your wishes will be fulfilled.

“Jann lagga Har Ekay Naee; tis ki aas na birthee jaaye.”

In Astpadhi 23, Guru Ji describes the enlightenment received by the blessed Sikh.

“Gyan anjjan Gur diya agyan andher binaas; Har kirpa te Sant bhetiya Nanak mann pargass.”

Astpadhi 24 speaks of being Complete/Perfect. God is Pura. His Name is Pura. The Satguru is Pura. And in pada 4 of the last Astpadhi Guru Ji says the Sikh has been rendered Pura too by Gur Parsad.

“Suparsan bhey Gurdev; Puran hoyi sewak ki sev.”

In this pada, Guru Ji advises the Sikh to have full faith in the humble beings and surrender your mind and body to them (Satgurus).

“Mann mere tinn ki Ote leh; mann tann apna tinn jann deh.”

Those humble Saints who have realized the Lord; become the Bestowers of all Gifts.

“Jinn jann apna Prabhu pechataa; so jann sarab thokh ka Dataa.”

In His Sanctuary, all comforts are obtained; and if you are blessed to receive His Darshan, all sins are erased.

“Tis ki Sharan sarab sukh paavhe; Tis ke daras sabh paap mitaavhe.”

Renounce all your clever tricks; enjoin yourself to the service of those Servants (Satgurus); your comings and goings shall end; Nanak says, always adore the Feet (Gurbani), of those humble Servants.

“Avar sianap saglee chadh; tis jann ki tu sewa laag; aavan jaan na hovee tera; Nanak tiss jann ke pujho sadh Paira.”
