SGGS Angg 625.

Raag Sorath M.5

Guru Ji tells us about bathing. The Gurus and Bhagats have stressed at many places in SGGS Ji, that washing your body can only give you some degree of cleanliness. What you need is purity, as God is Pure and only someone who has been purified by Naam and the Grace of the Guru, can hope for merger into the Divine.

At Angg 484, Bhagat Kabir Ji says,

“Sacha naavan Gur ki sewa.”

In the same Shabad, Bhagat Ji gives an example of the frog. It stays in water. If indeed water could purify it, then it would achieve salvation. Humans are like the frog, and they end up being repeatedly cast into reincarnation.

“Jalh ke majjan je gatt hovay nit nit mendak naavhe; jaise mendak taisey oh nar firr firr johnee aavhe.”

Gurbani tells us internal cleansing is needed, as in
“antargatt tirath malh naao.” (Japji Sahib).

This Shabad tells us of the blessings which flow from
“Ramdas sarovar natey.”

Ramdas refers to “Ram de dass,” i.e. servants of Ram, the All Pervading Lord. This sarovar is Sadhsangat.

Thus, washing yourself clean in sadhsanggat (Ramdas sarovar), all your sins are erased.

“Ramdas sarovar natey; sabh utrey paap kamatey.”

One becomes immaculately pure, by taking such a cleansing bath; this is a Gift bestowed by the Perfect Guru. (Shabad).

“Nirmal hoye kar ishnaana; Gur Purey kinney daana.”

At Angg 1411, Slok no 10 Vaaran tey Vadheek M.1, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says

“Nirmal naavan Nanaka Gur (Shabad), tirath dariayo.”

God has blessed all with peace and joy; everything is safe and sound as one reflects on the Guru’s Shabad.

“Sabh kusalh khem Prabh dharey; sahi salamat sabh thokh ubarey Gur ka Shabad bicharey.” (rahao).

Guru Ji makes it crystal clear here. In Sadhsangat all filth is washed off; the Supreme Lord becomes your Friend and Helper.

“Sadhsang malh lathee; Parbrahm bheyo Sathee.”

Nanak mediates on Naam, (the Attributes of the Lord); and has found (met) the Lord, the Primal Being.

“Nanak Naam dhiaaya; Aad Purakh Prabh paaya.”
