Raag Bhairo – Bhagat Kabir Ji.

Bhagat Kabir was the despair of the Mullahs and Pandits of Benares. Bhagat Ji was fearless, relied totally upon Naam and openly spoke out against hypocrisy, useless rituals and pretence.

In this Shabad, Bhagat Kabir Ji describes an incident where he was gagged and bound in chains and dumped into the Ganges by some pandits hoping to drown Bhagat Ji.

Bhagat Ji says the Ganges is very deep; I was bound in chains and taken there.

“Gang Gosaien gahir gambhir; janjeer baandh kar khare Kabir.”

My mind was not shaken; why should my body be afraid; my consciousness was immersed in the Lotus Feet (Naam, Bani) of the Lord.

“Man na diggay tan kahe ko daraeye; Charan Kamal chit rehiyo samaaiye” (rahao).

God intervened to save His Bhagat.

The waves of the Ganges broke the chains; I found I was seated on a deer skin.

“Ganga ki laher meri tutti janjeer; mrigshala par bethay Kabir.”

Kabir Ji concludes by saying when there is no friend or companion (to help you); the Lord is your Protector on land and water.

“Kahe Kabir kouu sang na saath; jal thall rakhan hai Ragunath.”
