Raag Gauree

A most difficult Shabad. With respect, my views are quite different from the translation found on the Internet.

The Shabad speaks of a Brahm Gyani Avastha, an Enlightened Soul, who sees the True Reality of Things.

The Brahm Gyani (actually it is the Satguru Himself).

I say Brahm Gyani because several lines say so.

“Bujh Re Gyani Eh Bichaar”

“Aap Bichare So Gyani Hoyi”

“Bujh Re Gyani Muaa Hai Kaun”

The Shabad starts by declaring the World Play (in which we all are players), centres around the carefully crafted union of air, fire, and water.

“Paune Paani Agni Ka Mel.”

The unstable, fickle intellect leads this Play.

“Chanchal Chapal Budh Ka Khel.”

In the body, there are nine apertures and One Door of the Tenth Gate.

“Nau Darvaje Daswa Dwar.”

O Wise, Enlightened Soul, Reflect upon this.

“Bujh Re Gyani Eh Bichaar.”

Behind the curtain of the World Play as the Brahm Gyani looks intently, he sees that all actions are done by God Himself. It is our haumai and the bharam bhulekha of maya that makes us think we are doing anything. In Reality, He is the One who Discourses, Speaks, And Listens.

“Kathata Bakta Suntaa Soyee.”

As He Himself decides to Reflect Upon Himself, a Brahm Gyani is born.

“Aap Bichare So Gyani Hoyee.”

(In Japji Sahib, Guru Ji has stated clearly, we have no power to Reflect upon Enlightenment.
“Jor Na Jugti Gyan Vichaar” The Power to do so rest solely in His Hands. “Jis Hath Jor Kar Vekhe Soyee.”)

The body in Essence is dust. The wind (breath) speaks through it.

“Dehi Maati Bolhe Paun.”

When the body dissipates (we call it death), the Brahm Gyani sees that no one has actually died (the soul never dies).

“Bujh Re Gyani Muaa Hai Kaun”

As the body crashes, the passions which drove the body die along with it, awareness, conflict and ego die.

“Moyee Suratt Baad Ahangkaar.”

The soul who was a silent observer to all this, never dies.

“Oh na muaa jo Dekhanhaar.”

To purify yourself, you travel to sacred shrines and holy rivers, when all along the Pure One (His Jote) was always within you.

“Jeh kaaran tatt tirath jahee; Rattan Padarath Ghat Hi Mahee.”

In contrast to the Brahm Gyani, the learned, educated ones, read and stir up arguments and controversies; not realising the Divine Commodity (Naam) lies secretly within.

“Parh Parh pandit badh bakhane; bhittar hodi Basst na jaane.”

The Brahm Gyani Realises, I do not ever die, it is the evil natured witch (of maya) within me which has died. The Jeev Atma is within you and is Pervading Everywhere, and never dies.

“Hao Na Muaa Meri Moyee Belaaiye; Oh Na Muaa Jo Rehiya Samaaiye.”

Nanak says, the Guru (Shabad) has revealed God to me (Blessed me with Darshan); the Brahm Gyani now sees, no one (i.e. the Jeev Atma) dies or goes anywhere.

“Kaho Nanak Gur Brahm Dikhaiya; Marta Jataa Nadar Na Aaiya.”
