Raag Sorath M.5.

Guru Ji lists many rituals and methods used by sadhus, yogis and pandits. None of them help to eradicate the five inner evils. In fact such practices increase your ego.

“Paath padiyo aur bedh bichareyo nival bhoyungam saday; panch janna sio sang na chutkiyo adikk ahumbudh banday”

Realizing the futility of all these rituals the Sikh falls at the Guru’s Feet pleading for “budh bibeka” – discerning wisdom where I can know what is right and what is wrong.

Guru Ji lists an astonishing number of futile methods. From observing silence (maun), wandering naked in the jungles, using the hands as eating utensils (refusing to use plates in the belief that you achieve purity by that), using the 84 aasans of the sidhs, increasing your age by pranayams.

The Shabad concludes by saying the best way is to do sadhsangat. It is the highest of all actions “sirr karman ke karma.”

You blend in sadhsangat if you have been blessed to be part of it.

The 2nd rahao tells us the sewak is now coloured with love for God. His mind is now imbued with Praises of God.
“…. Har Har kirtan eh mann rataa”

(“Bhaio kirpaal deen dukh bhangan har har keertan ih man raata.” (rahoo dujja).

Bhai Ji further elaborated on April 30, 2026:

Guru Ji goes through an astonishing range of methods used by sadhus, yogis, and other holy men.
None of these methods will release you from the 5 inner evils of kaam krodh, etc.
In fact, all these methods lead to greater ego, and bind you further.
“Panch janna seyo sang na chutkiyo adikh ahungbudh baandhe.”

Some keep vows of silence, (mohn bheyo) some refuse to eat from plates, and use only their palms, saying that is how nature intended it (karpathi rehiyo), some wander about naked in the jungles, saying it is the primal state, and the only way to meet God (naggan firiyo banh mahi).

Some stumble from tirath to tirath, hoping to cleanse themselves (tatt tirath sabh dharti bharmiyo..). At the most, these efforts cleanse the body, but the mind remains polluted, despite thousands of pilgrimages (mann ki maihl na utre eh bidh je lakh jattan karaiye).

Guru Ji tells us the futility of relying upon power, harems, horses, elephants, lands, charities. None lead to God’s door (…neh miliye Har Dwara).

Ritual worships, eighty four poses of yoga, long life, regal pomp, soft beds, all these lead him to only to the most horrible hells (sej sohni chandan choa narak ghor ka dwara).

Finally, Guru Ji tells us what really works in Uniting you with the Lord. It is “Har Kirat sadhsanggat hai sirh karman ke karma.” (Singing His Praises in sadhsanggat is the most Sublime of all actions). It is a truly fortunate one who receives blessings to Sing His Praises. (Kaho Nanak tis bheyo parapatt jis purab likhe ka lehna).

Just stick to Naam. Do Sadhsanggat regularly. Have complete faith in Gurbani. As you surrender to your Satguru (Shabad), He leads to Union within yourselves.

Bhai Ji further added on the same day:

No method beyond Naam is of any use towards Merger.

As for Use and Support of Naam, there is no method too. It is Prema Bhagti which attracts His Grace.
