Raag Assa

Some faiths believe that upon physical death, the jeev lies in the grave till judgement day.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji did not agree with that. In Asa Ki Vaar Guru Ji uses the example of a musalman.

Does the mitti (the decayed remains of the body which has now turned to dust – earth), of the musalman have the jeev in it?

Then, if that is so, as the potter – ghumiaar (takes the clay from nearby graveyards and makes a perha (wet clod of mud), to fashion some bhaande or itta (clay utensils or bricks) logically the jeev would be screaming in pain as the bhanda or brick is put on the fire to dry the clay.

It would be a helpless, miserable (bapri) jeev which cries (jal jal rovhe) as sparks fly from the clay.

Guru Ji concludes only the Creator (Karta) who created the jeev (kaaran) knows (So Jaane Kartar) where the jeev goes after shedding it’s human body.

As Gurbani explains in many other passages, either the jeev Merges into God while alive with Gur Parsad (jiwan mukat) or it is taken to face its lekha which is of Infinite ways.

A Muslim Sufi Sheikh Fareed Ji says as the body is cremated (jaaran) or taken to the grave, (gora naal), the jeev is taken to face the lekhas and suffer rebukes (ulaame jee sahe).

“Jimmi puche asmàan Fareeda khevat kinn gaye ; jallan gora naal ulaame jèe sahe” (Ang 488)
