Raag Assa
One Slok from Guru Ji’s Glorious Asa Ki Vaar.
Man’s conduct is vile. He does thousands of thefts, adulteries, deceptions, abuses, day and night. Thousands of falsehoods, secret deeds against fellow beings.
He goes to a person of high caste – Brahmin and puts on a janaeuu, a twisted cotton thread to show he is a spiritual and righteous person.
A goat (kohe bakra rinn khaaya), is slaughtered and a feast is held. Those present say, “put the sacred thread on, put it on” (sabh ko aakhe paaye).
After some time the thread wears out, breaks, and is thrown away. A new thread is now put on. (hoye purana sutiye bhi fir paaiye hor).
Guru Ji concludes, such a thread would never break if it was truly made of strong durable material. Guru Ji is referring to the liv, our inner attachment to God in our suratt. If your faith is true and your liv unshaken, under any circumstances, then such an Unseen Divine Thread would be truly strong and unbreakable. (“Nanak tagg na tuttiye je tagg hovay jor”).
Guru Ji says the external shows of Spirituality are useless if there is no strong inner connection with the Divine One.
