Raag Bihagara

Gurbani says we must look for the Wonderous One in His Fascinating Kudrat.

Gurbani has many references to birds and their nests.

Many birds make nests and guard it fiercely. The pigeon gets so attached to its nest, it refuses to fly away if a predator comes. Similarly, humans get so attached/tied to their home, it becomes a bondage for them. None of these things go with you. Live a life of shukrana for whatever dwelling He has blessed you with. With daily shukrana, you acknowledge everything belongs to Him, you become detached and Merger with Him starts.

Angg 538.

“Jio pankhi kapoth aap banaaiya (here banaaiya does not mean “make.” The root word is bandya i.e. to be tied to something) meri jindarhiye tio manmukh sabh vass kaale Raam.”

Angg 144, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says, the birds have no money in their pockets. They rely upon trees/vegetation and water to survive. Lord, You are the Only Giver. You Alone Lord, You Alone

“Parendhe na giraah jarh; darkhat aab aas kar; Dihund soyee; Ek Tuhi Ek Tuhi.”

Bhagat Ravidas Ji says, our souls are like birds perched upon a tree

“Jaise Tarvar Pankh Basera.” (Ang 659).

There are a few hundred imageries about birds and nests in SGGS Ji.

“ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਪੋਤਿ ਆਪੁ ਬਨ੍ਹਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਭਿ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਚੋਗੇ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਤਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਪੰਛੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Like the pigeon, which itself falls into the trap, O my soul, all the self-willed manmukhs fall under the influence of death.

Guru Raam Daas Ji in Raag Bihaagraa – 538

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
First Mehla:

ਪਰੰਦਏ ਨ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਜਰ ॥
ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਢੇ-ਪੱਲੇ ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
The birds have no money in their pockets.

ਦਰਖਤ ਆਬ ਆਸ ਕਰ ॥
ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਰੱੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
They place their hopes on trees and water.

ਦਿਹੰਦ ਸੁਈ ॥
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੈ ।
He alone is the Giver.

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੬॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ-ਦਾਤਾ) ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ।੬।
You alone, Lord, You alone. ||6||

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Maajh – 144

ਜੈਸੇ ਤਰਵਰ ਪੰਖਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦਾ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਰਾਤ ਲਈ) ਡੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੱਸੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ)
The soul is like a bird perched upon a tree. ||1||Pause||
