Guru Nanak Dev Ji has told us in Japji Sahib that God’s Hukam is so vast and infinite, it cannot be described in it’s entirety.

“….Hukam na kehiya jaaye.”

Despite the vastness of His Hukam, the Gurus and Bhagats have in certain cases clearly expressed
certain aspects of God’s Hukam.

One aspect of His Hukam is that you cannot have access to the Lord without the Sharan of a Satguru. There is no direct access to God. It can only happen through Gur Parsad from the Satguru.

In this Shabad, Guru Ji expresses that aspect of God’s Hukam and how a Sikh attains Gur Parsad towards Union with God.

From the very beginning it is part of His Cosmic Law (Hukam) that you cannot get consciousness of God without the Sharan of a Satguru; as one meets the Satguru (Shabad), realization sets in that He is permeating and pervading deep within himself, and he sets out to absorb himself forever in the Lord’s Love.

“Dhur Khasme ka Hukam bheya vin Satgur chetiya na jaaye; Satgur miliye antar rev rehiya sada rehya liv laaye.”

Such a blessed Sikh now constantly remembers the Lord with every breath, and does not allow any breath to pass in vain (without remembering the Lord); his fears of births and deaths depart and he is blessed with the state (avastha) of eternal life.

“Damm damm sada samaalda damm na birtha jaaye; janam maran ka bhao gyaa jeewan padvi paaye.”

Nanak says He bestows this honored status upon the mortal when He showers His Grace in His Will.

“Nanak eh martaba tis nu deh jis nu kirpa kare rajaaiye.”
