Raag Sri Raag
SGGS Ang 26
Guru Ji makes a very important Divine Observation. The Lord is “Aschall” i.e. He cannot be deceived (“shallh) by any means. He remains in the Fortress of the mind and this Fortress cannot be pierced by any sharp instrument or dagger.
“Aschall shallayi neh shallhe neh ghao katara kar sakay.”
Then Guru ji explains how one can have access to the Lord.
Firstly, one should accept the Lord’s Will. As you begin to accept His Will, your greed for maya will erode and your inner being turns away from external attractions.
“Jio Sahib rakhe tio rahe is lobhi ka jio talh palhe.”
To access the Fortress of the mind, which is enveloped by darkness, you need light. For the lamp to be lighted, you need some fuel. In the first rahao, thus, Guru Ji poses a question “how can the lamp (of inner enlightenment) be lit without oil (Naam)?
“Bin tel diwa kyo jalhe.” (rahao).
In answer to the question posed above, Guru Ji next says one should practice what is stated in the Scriptures. As you do so, you will develop a fear that you do not wish to break His Hukam. That fear of breaching God’s Hukam will become the wick needed to light the lamp of Enlightenment within the body. (Live an honest life, abide by the Truth, rely upon Naam, do sadhsanggat, sewa).
“Pothi Puran kamaaiye; bhao vatti eit tann paaiye.”
As Divine Wisdom of Truth sets in, that becomes the Spark necessary to light the lamp within.
“Sach bujhan aan jalaaiye.”
Guru Ji concludes by saying this is the mystical oil by which the lamp of inner Enlightenment is lit. As the Lord Himself lights it, He then Meets you.
“Kar chanan Sahib tao milhe.” (rahao).
As the Bani of the Guru starts taking effect upon the mortals body; he finds peace by engaging in sewa (selfless service); and realises that the world is transitory and the world continues coming and going in reincarnation.
“Sabh duniya aavan jaaniya.”
As one engages in sewa in this world, he then gets a place of eternal peace in the Lord’s Court, and he swings his arms with boundless joy.
“Vich duniya sev kamaaiye; ta Dargeh bessan paaiye; Kaho Nanak bah ludhaaiye.”
(With respect, my translation of the Shabad is quite different from the version on the next. Especially the first line. The net says the Undeceivable is maya. I have said the Undeceivable “Aschalh” refers to the Lord. The rest of the Shabad refers to how one gains access to Him, with His Grace).
