Raag Majh
SGGS Ang 136
In the month of Phagun, Bara Maha Bani will be read. All Bani that will be read is in Praise of Akal Purakh.
Both the Bara Maha Banis in SGGS Ji trace the advent of time through the 12 months of the Indian Calendar. There is fascinating description of God’s Kudrat, the changes that can be seen every month. Some months are dry, some rainy, some cold, some have a delightful mix of seasons.
The backdrop of these external monthly seasons and changes in nature, is used as a setting to describe the internal avastha of the jeev isteri striving for Union with the Divine One within her.
As Phagun is the final month, Guru Ji uses the setting to describe fulfilment and Merger. The ship has come to port and there is inner bliss as the jeev isteri, separated for many births, finally gets Darshan and eternal peace.
Guru Ji starts by saying there is untold bliss as the Lord, the True Friend, has manifested Himself.
“Falgun anand uparjana Har Sajjan pragtay aaye.”
The jeev isteri is mindful of the fact that this was possible only through the Grace of the Saints (Guru).
“Sant sahayi Ram ke kar kirpa diya milaiye.”
In Union, the jeev isteri shares the same bed of her heart with the Lord, and there is absolutely no pain or difficulty.
“Sej suhavi sarab sukh hun dukha nahi jaaiye.”
Her wishes have been fulfilled as she has now found her Husband Lord.
“Ish puni vadhbhagni Var paaiya Har Rai.”
She joyfully joins her friends (satsanggat) and Sings Praises of God.
“Mil sahiya manggal gaavhi Geet Govind Alaaiye.”
She realises there is none like the Wonderful Lord, and no other can compare himself with God.
“Har jeha avar na dissayi koyi dujja lavhe na laaiye.”
All her affairs here and hereafter have been settled, and she is now an eternal place of rest.
“Halatt palatt sawariyon nichal ditiyan jaaiye.”
She has been saved from the world ocean, and will never have to wander about or be reborn.
“Sansar sagar te rakhiyan bahurh na janame dhaaiye.”
She had only one tongue to Sing His Infinite Praises, but was saved by attaching herself to the Lord’s Feet (Bani).
“Jehva Ek anek Gunn tareh Nanak Charni paaiye.”
In the month of Phalgun, one should continuously Sing the Praises of the Lord, who has not an iota of greed.
“Phalgun nit salahiye jis nu til na tamaaiye.”
