Raag Kanra is the 28th Raag, out of 31 Raags in SGGS Ji.
This raag has a martial beat, and is often used by the Indian armed forces to induce a sense of valor in soldiers. The raag induces “bir rass.”
As the raag incites a sense of bravery, it is also used in Royal Courts, to sing odes of heroes.

In Gurbani Kirtan, the raag induces a sense of Bhagti bir rass, Divine dignity and valor.

The time best suited for singing of this raag is “raat da dujja pahar” ie the 2nd quarter of the night, from 9-12 midnight. At Harimandar Sahib, Shabads from this Raag are sung in the final Kirtan Chaunki, just before Guru Ji’s Sukhasan is completed around 10pm.

This Raag has Shabads by Guru Ramdas Ji, Guru Arjun Dev Ji and one Shabad by Bhagat Namdev Ji. The final Vaar, out of 22 Vaars is found in this raag. It is by Guru Ramdas Ji and the Glory of God’s Name (Attributes) is lyrically stated with love and adoration.
