Guru Arjan Dev Ji
In conjunction with Sangrand, usher in the month of Assu, Sing Praises of God, read Bara Maha.
All the Bani to be read is in Praise of Nirankar Ji.
Amongst the Banis to be read is Bara Maha. Normally the Bara Maha by Guru Arjun Dev Ji is read.
This Bara Maha has 14 padas. The 1st, introductory pada brings forth the main theme of this Bani.
Guru Ji says mortals are “kirat karam ke vichre” i.e. one gets distanced from God as a result of his past actions. Only His Grace can Unite the mortal again with God. “Kar Kirpa melho Ram.”
To get His Grace, one has to acquire Gunn, (Naam, Godly Attributes).
Guru Ji gives two examples where Gunn are absent.
Firstly, Guru Ji gives an example of a cow. Once it stops giving milk, it is of no use to the farmer.
“Dhen dudhe te bahri kitte na aavhe kaam.”
Second example is that of an arid land. Without water, whatever is grown there, withers and dies.
“Jal bin sakh kumlawati upjhe nahi daam.”
Similarly, without Gunn (Naam, Bani, Shabad) you cannot meet the Lord, and cannot get Peace.
“Har Naah na miliye Saajne kat paiyeh bisraam.”
Shabad Viakhya by Bhai Manjeet Singh Ji.
