Bhatt Sawaiyye – Sawaiyye Mehle Chauthe Ke

(SGGS Ji Ang 1396-1406)

Guru Ramdas Ji was born on 24-9-1534, at Chuna Mandi, Lahore. He was named Bhai Jetha at birth. His father was Bhai Haridas Ji and his mother was Mata Daya Kaur Ji. He was orphaned at the age of 7, and was cared for by His grandmother.

Shortly, after losing his parents, Bhai Jetha Ji moved to Goindwal and earned a living by selling ghungnian – boiled grams (cholay). At Goindwal, He was cared for by Guru Amardas Ji. In 1553, at the age of 18, Bhai Jetha Ji was married to Guru Amardas Ji’s daughter, Bibi Bhani Ji.

From 1553 till 1574, Bhai Jetha Ji did sewa at Goindwal Sahib.  He preached Gurbani. He also represented the Guru at the Court of Emperor Akbar and answered a complaint that had been made against Guru Amardas Ji by sadhus, jealous of the Guru’s growing popularity. He also took part in completing the Baoli Sahib.

Bhai Jetha Ji was anointed as the 4th Guru of the Sikhs and renamed as Guru Ramdas Ji in 1574. In 1577, Guru Ji moved from Goindwal to Ramdaspur, later renamed Amritsar. He started the foundation of the sarovar at Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Bhatt Kalasahar Ji starts the Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Ramdas Ji and says in Pada no. 1, we should single-mindedly meditate on the Immaculate Primal Lord. One should sing His Praises forever with the Guru’s Grace. As one Sings His Praises, his mind begins to blossom in ecstasy. The Satguru fulfills the hopes of the humble servants, and as one serves the Satguru (Shabad), one rises to the Supreme Spiritual state. One should meditate on the Imperishable, Formless Lord, and as one Unites with Him, all poverty is banished.

Bhatt Kalasahar Ji, now sings the Praises of that humble Sublime Being, blessed with the Enlightenment of Naam. He served the Satguru (Shabad Roop, Guru Amardas Ji) and delighted in the Shabad, and enshrined the Immaculate Naam in His heart.

He is the enthusiastic purchaser of the Lord’s Naam, always with the Essence of Reality, and is the Ocean of Fairness to all.

Bhatt Kalasahar Ji the poet, sings the Praises of Guru Ramdas Ji, the son of Thakur Hari Dass Ji, who fills the empty hearts of men to become overflowing with Naam.

whoever enshrines the Name of the Guru within his heart, is rid of both birth and death. ||3||7||

Without the Guru, there is utter darkness; without the Guru, understanding does not come.

Without the Guru, there is no intuitive awareness or success; without the Guru, there is no liberation.

So make Him your Guru, and contemplate the Truth; make Him your Guru, O my mind.

Make Him your Guru, who is embellished and exalted in the Word of the Shabad; all your sins shall be washed away.

So speaks NALL the poet: with your eyes, make Him your Guru; with the words you speak, make Him your Guru, your True Guru.

Those who have not seen the Guru, who have not made Him their Guru, are useless in this world. ||4||8||

He is the Perfect Primal Being, who meditates in remembrance on the Lord within his heart; seeing His Face, sins run away.

If you long for wisdom, wealth, spiritual perfection and prosperity, O my mind, dwell upon the Guru, the Guru, the Guru. ||5||9||

My mind has become perfect; it dwells in the Lord’s Place; it had been wandering in all directions, in its desire for tastes and pleasures.

So speaks the Lord’s slave: Guru Raam Daas placed His Faith in Guru Amar Daas, the Guru of the World; touching the Philosopher’s Stone, He was transformed into the Philosopher’s Stone.

O Great True Guru, if it pleases You, please save the honor of Your slave in this Dark Age of kali Yuga. ||8||12||”

After 8 Radd Sawaiyye, we see another subheading “Jholnaa.”  Jholnaa is another poetic variation of Sawaiyye. The poetic flow of the Jholnaa Sawaiyya represents the gentle balance of a swing which swings back and forth. In Punjabi, Jholnaa is called “peeng”’ or “Jhulnaa.”

The first Jholnaa Sawaiyya by Bhatt Nal Ji sings Praises of the Guru (Shabad Roop).

O mortals, chant the Shabad (ਗੁਰੁ), of the Guru, the Shabad of the Guru. Recite the Shabad of the Lord, His Name has all the nine treasures. Know that His Name is True (Eternal) and recite it with your tongue, day and night.

As you continually recite, His Love envelops you. Remember Him in the Guru’s Sharan, and give up all other ways and methods (besides Naam). Enshrine the Guru’s Bani in your heart, overcome the five passions, be honored in the Lord’s Court, and save your generations.

If you seek all the peace and comforts of this world and the next, recite the Shabad (ਗੁਰੁ), of the Guru, the Shabad of the Guru.

“ਝੋਲਨਾ ॥

Jholnaa:

Chant Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, O mortal beings.

Chant the Shabad, the Word of the Lord, Har, Har; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, brings the nine treasures. With your tongue, taste it, day and night, and know it as true.

Then, you shall obtain His Love and Affection; become Gurmukh, and meditate on Him. Give up all other ways; vibrate and meditate on Him, O spiritual people.

Enshrine the Word of the Guru’s Teachings within your heart, and overpower the five passions. Your life, and your generations, shall be saved, and you shall be honored at the Lord’s Door.

If you desire all the peace and comforts of this world and the next, then chant Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, O mortal beings. ||1||13||”

The numbering here is 1//13//, indicating that it is the first Jholnaa Sawaiyye, and the 13th Sawaiyya by Bhatt Nal Ji.

There are 4 Jholnaa Sawaiyye and they conclude at Angg 1401 with the number //4//16//29//.

This is the prayer of the Lord’s humble slave: the Gurmukh obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord, chanting Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, O my mind. ||4||16||29||”

This is followed by 13 Sawaiyye by Bhatt Gayand Ji.

Bhatt Ji starts his Sawaiyye by saying that the Great Supreme Guru is Greatest of all. In the Satjug age, it was the Guru who blessed Dhruv Bhagat Ji, and saved Bhagat Prahlad Ji by placing His Lotus Hands upon his forehead.

The Unseen Lord is Indescribable. Siddhas and seekers seek His Sanctuary. One should enshrine the Guru’s Words (Bani) in the heart and accept it as True. In this way you will emancipate your body and redeem this human reincarnation.

The Shabad (ਗੁਰੂ) is the Boat of the Guru, and none can be saved without it. It is with the Guru’s Grace, that one merges into God and no one can be liberated without the Guru.

In the Shabad (ਗੁਰੂ), Guru Nanak Ji, the Creator Lord dwells nearby. Guru Nanak Ji established Bhai Lehna Ji as Guru , and His Divine Light illuminated the world. Bhai Lehna practiced the Path of Righteousness and passed this onto Guru Amardas Ji, of the Bhalla dynasty, who in turn firmly established Guru Ramdas Ji of the Sodhi Dynasty. Guru Ramdas Ji was blessed with the Treasure of the Invincible Name. This Treasure of the Invincible Name prevails though the four ages and is received as a reward for service of the Guru.

Those who bow at His Feet (Bani), receive peace in His Sanctuary and the Guru oriented ones are blessed with Supreme bliss. Guru Ramdas Ji’s Body (Bani) is the Embodiment of the Supreme Lord God, who nourishes and cherishes all, from the beginning of time. So, serve the Satguru, the Shabad Guru, whose ways and means are beyond fathom. Guru Ramdas Ji (Shabad Roop) is the Boat to carry us across.

Bhatt Gayand Ji has 5 Sawaiyye in this style. At Angg 1402, however, the poetic style of the Sawaiyye change.

Therefore in Sawaiyye no. 6, Bhatt Gayand Ji says God is Wondrous, Fascinating, Amazing. Attributes usually associated with Krishna Ji, are used to describe Waheguru Ji, Nirankar Ji.

Lord, You are lotus-eyed, of sweet speech, have millions of armies. Your company is always exalting. You, as Krishna Ji were invited by his mother Yashoda to eat sweet rice and curds. Anyone who is Blessed to gaze upon Your Supremely Beautiful Form, (Jote), becomes entranced, and hears the delightful tinkling of the Shabad (Dhunni, Anhad Vaje).

In Your Hands, You hold the Pen and Command of death, and none can erase Your Writ. Shiva and Brahma yearn to enshrine You in their hearts. You are forever Eternal and True, the Source of maya (Creation). Always the Primal, Supreme Being, You are Wonderful, Fascinating and Amazing Lord.

“ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Your Name is the All Pervading Lord, of Sovereign Mansion, of Absolute Clear Understanding and Wisdom, Unique, and none can compare to You. You are Pure Hearted, and for the sake of Your Saint, Bhagat Prahlad Ji, You took the Form of the Man-Lion, destroyed, and tore apart Harnakash, with Your Claws.

You are adorned with the Conch, Circular Saw, Mace and Lotus (four symbols, associated with Krishna). You, Yourself, deceived Balraja; You are the Infinite Lord, who can claim to know You?

You are Eternal and True, the Source of maya (Creation), O Primal Supreme Being, You are always Amazing, Fascinating and Wondrous. The number here is //2//7//.

You wear yellow robes (color of royalty, worn by Krishna), have pure white teeth like jasmine flowers, dwell amongst Your loving Saints, have a mala around Your neck, wear a crowning head gear of peacock feathers, you act Independently, and have no advisors, are Very Patient, the Embodiment of Righteousness, You staged the Play of the Universe, and gaze upon it with delight.

Your Story is beyond Expression, and You pervade the three worlds. You are the King of Kings and intuitively assumed all forms. You are Eternal and True, the Source of maya (creation). O Primal Supreme Being, You are Always Wondrous, Fascinating and Amazing. //3//8//.

You are forever True, the Home of Excellence, the Primal Supreme Being. Waahay Guru, Waahay Guru, Waahay Guru, Waahay Jee-o. ||3||8||”

After singing Praises of God, using the imagery of Krishna Ji (Vishnu Ji), Bhatt Ji now sings Praises of the Satguru (Shabad Roop), which in Essence is Formless too – “Vah, Vah Bani Nirankar Hai, Tis Jewad aavar na koi.’’

The Eternal Guru, The True Guru, Shabad Roop Satguru (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ) is verily, the Lord of the Universe, Himself.

The Satguru is the Deceiver of Balraja, smothers the mighty, fulfills the Saints, the Prince Krishna, is Kalki (the spotless Redeemer), and the thunder of His army, and the beat of His drum echoes across the Universe.

The Lord is all Divine Contemplation, Himself, the Destroyer of sin, brings joy to beings of all realms, is the God of all demi-gods, and is manifested as the thousand headed king cobra, too. (You, Lord, manifested as the ten avatars of Vishnu too). The incarnation of Fish was You, Tortoise and the Wild Boar too. It was You in manifest Form who sported with a ball on the banks of the Yamuna river. Your Name is Sublime, and should be enshrined in the heart; Gayand (the Bhatt) says one should renounce all wickedness of the mind. The True Guru, the Satguru, (Shabad Roop), is verily the Lord of the Universe Himself. //4//9//.

“ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਜੀਉ ॥

The True Guru, the True Guru, the True Guru is the Lord of the Universe Himself.

On account of Your Blessings, Your servants receive total fulfillment, throughout the ages. You are Formless. Lord, no one can say when You came into Being. You created countless Brahmas, and Vishnus, all were intoxicated with emotional attachment (to maya). You created the 8.4 million species of beings, and have always provided for their sustenance. On account of Your Blessings, Your servants receive total fulfillment throughout the ages.

“ਸੇਵਕ ਕੈ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵਾਹਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਦਕਾ ॥

The numbering here is //1//11//, indicating that the poetic flow of the Sawaiyya has changed.  It is the first such Sawaiyya, and thus far Bhatt Gayand Ji has 11 Sawaiyye. Earlier, the word Waheguru was used. In this new style of Sawaiyya, the word Wahguru is used.

Great is the Play of the Wondrous Lord, He is the One who laughs, and thinks. He Himself illuminates the sun and the moon. He, Himself is the water, the earth and its support, and He himself abides in every heart. He himself is male and female too, the Chessman and the Dice. All should take the Sanctuary of the Guru and reflect upon the Great Play of the Wondrous Lord . //2//12//

“ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਾ ਬਡਾ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥

As Gurmukh, join the Sangat, and consider all this: Waaho! Waaho! Great! Great is the Play of God! ||2||12||”

Lord, You Yourself formed and put together this Great Play. You pervade and permeate the water, land, skies and nether regions, and Your Words (Dhur Ki Bani), are sweeter than Ambrosial Nectar.

Brahmas and Shivas respect and obey You. You are the Death of death itself, and I beg from You, Imperishable Lord, detached from all maya.

As one gets his mind drenched in satsanggat, it is with the Guru’s Grace, that one obtains the Supreme Gift (Naam).

Lord, You Yourself formed and put together this Great Play.

The next Sawaiyya uses the word Waheguru and Wahguru interchangeably, indicating Waheguru and Wahguru carry the same meaning. One should note the 1st line of this Sawaiyya and compare it with the last line of the Sawaiyya.

“ਕੀਆ ਖੇਲੁ ਬਡ ਮੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਰਚਨਾ ॥

You have formed and created this play, this great game. O Waahay Guru, this is all You, forever.

By Guru’s Grace, the greatest thing is obtained, and the mind is involved with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

You have formed and created this play, this great game. O Waahay Guru, this is all Your making. ||3||13||42||”

Next comes 7 Sawaiyye by Bhatt Mathura Ji. In his first Sawaiyya, Bhatt Ji says, the Lord is unreachable by physical means, He is Infinite, Primordial, and no one knows His beginning. Shiva and Brahma meditate upon Him daily, and the Vedas describe Him too. He is Formless, Beyond hate, and there is no one else like Him. He is All Powerful, and creates, destroys and He Himself allows salvation. He created the world in its Infinite aspects, and His humble servant Mathura delights in Singing His Praises.

It is the Eternal Name of this Creator Lord, that dwells in the heart of Guru Ramdas Ji. //1//.  Bhatt Mathura Ji’s 7 Sawaiyye end at Angg 1407, with the number //7/49//.

The Sawaiyye of Bhatt Bhall Ji conclude at Anggs 1405 with the numbering //5//54//.

Four Sawaiyye by Bhatt Kirat Ji comes next.

In his first Sawaiyya, Bhatt Kirat Ji says Guru Ramdas Ji lived in accordance with the Teachings of the Shabad, ascended to the Supreme Status (of Merger), and did not stop His service of Guru Amardas Ji. From this service, the Divine Light of Wisdom shone forth inHim, destroying all pain, poverty and darkness (of ignorance). Just as Guru Angad Ji was a part and constantly with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, similarly, Guru Ramdas Ji (Shabad Roop – ਗੁਰੁ) was one with Guru Amardas Ji. //1//.

“ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਨ ਛੋਡਿਓ ਪਾਸੁ ॥

Living the Word of the Shabad, He attained the supreme status; while performing selfless service, He did not leave the side of Guru Amar Daas.

From that service, the light from the jewel of spiritual wisdom shines forth, radiant and bright; it has destroyed pain, poverty and darkness.

The Unspoken Speech of Guru Amar Daas cannot be expressed with only one tongue.

I am overflowing with sins and demerits; I have no merits or virtues at all. I abandoned the Ambrosial Nectar, and I drank poison instead.

I am attached to Maya, and deluded by doubt; I have fallen in love with my children and spouse.

I have heard that the most exalted Path of all is the Sangat, the Guru’s Congregation. Joining it, the fear of death is taken away.
