Bhatt Sawaiyye – Sawaiyye Mehla Panjve Ke

(SGGS Ji Ang 1406-1409)

Guru Arjun Dev Ji was born on April 15, 1563 at Goindwal Sahib, Punjab.  His parents were Guru Ramdas Ji and Bibi Bhani Ji.

Guru Ji’s Jote Jote was on 30th May, 1606 at Lahore.

Guru Ji spent the first 11 years of his life in Goindwal, and the next 7 years with his father at Ramdaspur.  He ascended to the Gurgaddi in 1581.

Guru Ji completed the infrastructure of the Harmandir Sahib, and later installed Pothi Sahib in the Gurdwara in 1604. Guru Arjun Dev Ji has 2,218 Shabads in SGGS Ji, almost a third of the entire contents.

There are 21 Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Jote of Satguru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji. 12 Sawaiyye are by Bhatt Kalasahar Ji, 7 by Bhatt Mathura Ji, and 2 by Bhatt Harbans Ji.

Bhatt Kalasahar Ji starts the Sawaiyye by stating that one should meditate in remembrance on the Eternal, Imperishable, Primal Lord. Such meditation removes the filth of evil mindedness. Enshrine the Lotus Feet (Bani) of the Satguru in your heart, and reflect upon the Glorious Virtues of Guru Arjun Ji. He manifested in the House of Guru Ramdas Ji, and all hopes and desires were fulfilled.


Guru Ji, You realised God at birth through the Guru’s Teachings. Kalasahar, the Poet, with palms joined together, sings Your Praises.

You are Victor of devotional worship, and it is as if Janak (the Perfect king in worldly and Spiritual matters) has come into the world.

In Guru Arjun Dev Ji, the Shabad Guru manifests itself, and the Lord dwells on the tongue (as one recites the Bani of Guru Arjun Dev Ji). Just as Guru Angad Ji and Guru Amardas Ji attached to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and achieved the Supreme status, in the House of Guru Ramdas Ji, was born the Saint Guru Arjun (Shabad Roop).

“ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਸਿਮਰੰ ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਚਲੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥

Meditate in remembrance on the Primal Lord God, Eternal and Imperishable.

ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਨਾਸੀ ॥

Remembering Him in meditation, the filth of evil-mindedness is eradicated.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਰਿਦਿ ਧਾਰੰ ॥

I enshrine the Lotus Feet of the True Guru within my heart.

ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਗੁਣ ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥

With intuitive peace and poise, I contemplate the Glorious Virtues of Guru Arjun.

ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਘਰਿ ਕੀਅਉ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

He was revealed in the House of Guru Raam Daas,

ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

and all hopes and desires were fulfilled.

ਤੈ ਜਨਮਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਓ ॥

From birth, He realized God through the Guru’s Teachings.

ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਵਖਾਣਿਓ ॥

With palms pressed together, KALL the poet speaks His praises.

ਭਗਤਿ ਜੋਗ ਕੌ ਜੈਤਵਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨਕੁ ਉਪਾਯਉ ॥

The Lord brought Him into the world, to practice the Yoga of devotional worship.

ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਕਾਸਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਸਾਯਉ ॥

The Word of the Guru’s Shabad has been revealed, and the Lord dwells on His tongue.

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦ ਅਮਰ ਲਾਗਿ ਉਤਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਯਉ ॥

Attached to Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amar Daas, He attained the supreme status.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਭਗਤ ਉਤਰਿ ਆਯਉ ॥੧॥

In the House of Guru Raam Daas, the devotee of the Lord, Guru Arjun was born. ||1||”

In Sawaiyya no. 2, Bhatt Ji says, by great good fortune, Guru Ji’s mind is exalted, and the Shabad (Naam) dwells in His heart. The jewel of His mind is contented, and the Guru has implanted Naam within Him. The Inaccessible, Unfathomable Supreme Lord is revealed though the True Guru.

Shabad Roop Guru Arjun Ji of inner Enlightenment, was born in the House of Guru Ramdas Ji.

“ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਉਨਮਾਨਿਅਉ ਰਿਦਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਬਸਾਯਉ ॥

By great good fortune, the mind is uplifted and exalted, and the Word of the Shabad dwells in the heart.

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਅਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਯਉ ॥

The jewel of the mind is contented; the Guru has implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within.

ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਰਸਾਯਉ ॥

The Inaccessible and Unfathomable, Supreme Lord God is revealed through the True Guru.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਅਨਭਉ ਠਹਰਾਯਉ ॥੨॥

In the House of Guru Raam Daas, Guru Arjun has appeared as the Embodiment of the Fearless Lord. ||2||”

The 3rd Sawaiyya says the benign rule of Raja Janak of the Golden Age of Satjug, has been brought forth by Guru Arjun Ji. His mind is pleased and appeased by the Guru’s Shabad, and the restless mind is at peace. The Shabad Roop Guru Nanak Ji, who laid the foundation of Truth, has blended into Guru Arjun Ji. The Shabad Roop, Guru Arjun Ji, born in the House of Guru Ramdas Ji, can be seen as the Embodiment of the Infinite Lord.

“ਜਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਬਰਤਾਇਆ ਸਤਜੁਗੁ ਆਲੀਣਾ ॥

The benign rule of Raja Janak has been established, and the Golden Age of Sat Yuga has begun.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਪਤੀਣਾ ॥

Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the mind is pleased and appeased; the unsatisfied mind is satisfied.

ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਵ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੀਣਾ ॥

Guru Nanak laid the foundation of Truth; He is blended with the True Guru.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਬੀਣਾ ॥੩॥

In the House of Guru Raam Daas, Guru Arjun has appeared as the Embodiment of the Infinite Lord. ||3||”

Sawaiyya no. 4 says, the Sovereign Lord King has staged this Wondrous Play, and gathering together, contentment and pure understanding, infused them in the True Guru. Kalasahar, the poet sings the Praises of the Unborn, Self-Existent Lord. Guru Nanak Ji blessed Guru Angad Ji, who blessed Guru Amardas Ji with the Treasure (of Naam). Guru Ramdas Ji blessed Guru Arjun Ji, who was transformed and exalted by the touch of the Mystical Blessed Wand (Bani of Guru Ramdas Ji).

“ਖੇਲੁ ਗੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਉ ਕੀਅਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸਮਾਚਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਓ ਬਿਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਾਣਉ ॥

The Sovereign Lord King has staged this wondrous play; contentment was gathered together, and pure understanding was infused in the True Guru.

ਆਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਵਿਅਉ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਕਵੀਅਣਿ ਬਖਾਣਿਅਉ ॥

KALL the poet utters the Praises of the Unborn, Self-existent Lord.

ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਅੰਗਦੁ ਵਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਅੰਗਦਿ ਅਮਰ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥

Guru Nanak Ji blessed Guru Angad Ji, and Guru Angad JI blessed Guru Amardas Ji with the Treasure (of Naam).

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਵਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ ॥੪॥

Guru Raam Daas blessed Guru Arjun, who touched the Philosopher’s Stone, and was certified. ||4||”

Sawaiyya no. 5 says Guru Arjun Ji is Eternal, Priceless, Unborn and Self Illumined. He is the Destroyer of fear, Dispeller of pain, Infinite, and has Intuitive Enlightenment. The Guru has grasped the Ungraspable, burnt away doubt and illusion, and bestows cool, soothing peace. 

First Guru Nanak Ji, then Guru Angad Ji and Guru Amardas Ji, all True Gurus, have been absorbed in the word of the Shabad (Naam).

Blessed, Blessed is Guru Ramdas Ji (Shabad Roop) who has blended Guru Arjun Ji into Himself.

“ਸਦ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਅਮੋਲੁ ਆਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ॥

O Guru Arjun, You are Eternal, Invaluable, Unborn, Self-existent,

ਭਯ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਰ ਦੁਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਨੰਭਉ ॥

the Destroyer of fear, the Dispeller of pain, Infinite and Fearless.

ਅਗਹ ਗਹਣੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭ੍ਰਾਂਤਿ ਦਹਣੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੁਖ ਦਾਤਉ ॥

You have grasped the Ungraspable, and burnt away doubt and skepticism. You bestow cooling and soothing peace.

ਆਸੰਭਉ ਉਦਵਿਅਉ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਧਾਤਉ ॥

The Self-existent, Perfect Primal Lord God Creator has taken birth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਗਦ ਅਮਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇਅਉ ॥

First, Guru Nanak, then Guru Angad and Guru Amar Daas, the True Guru, have been absorbed into the Word of the Shabad.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਉ ॥੫॥

Blessed, blessed is Guru Raam Daas, the Philosopher’s Stone, who transformed Guru Arjun unto Himself. ||5||”

The 6th Sawaiyya says, the Victory of Guru Arjun Dev Ji (over maya, all vikaars) is proclaimed all over the world. His home is blessed as He remains United with the Lord. By great good fortune, He United with the Perfect Guru (Shabad), remains lovingly attuned to God and bears the load of the earth. You are the Destroyer of fear, Eradicator of the pains of others, and O Guru, Kalasahar sings Your Praises. In the Sodhi family is born Guru Arjun Ji, the son of Guru Ramdas Ji. The Divine White Flag flutters over Guru Arjun Ji, the Saint of God.

“ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਜਾਸੁ ਜਗ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਿਵ ਰਹਤਾ ॥

His victory is proclaimed all over the world; His Home is blessed with good fortune; He remains united with the Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਯਉ ਬਡ ਭਾਗੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੇਦਨਿ ਭਰੁ ਸਹਤਾ ॥

By great good fortune, He has found the Perfect Guru; He remains lovingly attuned to Him, and endures the load of the earth.

ਭਯ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਰ ਪੀਰ ਨਿਵਾਰਨੁ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਸਹਾਰੁ ਤੋਹਿ ਜਸੁ ਬਕਤਾ ॥

He is the Destroyer of fear, the Eradicator of the pains of others. Kall Sahaar the poet utters Your Praise, O Guru.

ਕੁਲਿ ਸੋਢੀ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਤਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਧੁਜਾ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ॥੬॥

In the Sodhi family, is born Arjun, the son of Guru Raam Daas, the holder of the banner of Dharma and the devotee of God. ||6||”

Sawaiyya no. 7 says Guru Arjun Dev jI is the Support of Righteousness, deeply immersed in the Teachings of the Guru, and Removes the pains of others. The Shabad (Bani) from Guru Arjun Ji is Excellent and Sublime, and He is kind and Generous like the Lord, and is the Destroyer of egotism. He is Great Giver of Spiritual Wisdom of the Guru and His Enthusiasm (to serve God) never wanes. He is the Embodiment of Truth, contained in the mantra of the Lord’s Name, in which the Nine Treasures (Divine Blessings) are never exhausted. O, son of Guru Ramdas Ji, You have the Canopy of Loving Wisdom spread over You, and You are contained in all. Kalasahar the poet says, O Guru Arjun Ji, You dwell in Raj Yog, where one is always connected to God and rules over the entire world.

“ਧ੍ਰੰਮ ਧੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਭੀਰੁ ਪਰ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਸਾਰਣੁ ॥

The Support of the Dharma, immersed in the deep and profound Teachings of the Guru, the Remover of the pains of others.

ਸਬਦ ਸਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਮ ਉਦਾਰੁ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੁ ॥

The Shabad is excellent and sublime, kind and generous like the Lord, the Destroyer of egotism.

ਮਹਾ ਦਾਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਨ ਹੁਟੈ ॥

The Great Giver, the spiritual wisdom of the True Guru, His mind does not grow weary of its yearning for the Lord.

ਸਤਿਵੰਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਨ ਨਿਖੁਟੈ ॥

The Embodiment of Truth, the Mantra of the Lord’s Name, the nine treasures are never exhausted.

ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਤਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਚੰਦੋਆ ਤਾਣਿਅਉ ॥

O Son of Guru Raam Daas, You are contained amidst all; the canopy of intuitive wisdom is spread above You.

ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯੁਚਰੈ ਤੈ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਗ ਰਸੁ ਜਾਣਿਅਉ ॥੭॥

So speaks KALL the poet: O Guru Arjun, You know the sublime essence of Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success. ||7||”

Sawaiyya no. 8 says, living in the fear of God’s Hukam, You experience the Fearless Lord, and amongst thousands of beings, You see the Unseen Lord. With the Grace of the Satguru, You have realised the Inaccessible, Unfathomable, Profound Lord. With the Guru’s Grace, You are Approved in the Lord’s Court, and while ruling over the world, You are always connected with God. Blessed, Blessed is the Shabad Guru, who fills up the empty pools (minds) to overflowing (with Naam). By connecting with the Shabad Guru, You endured the unendurable and Merged into the Divine Pool of Contentment. Kalasahar the poet says, O Guru Arjun Ji, You are always lovingly attuned to God, within Yourself.

“ਭੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮਾਣਿਅਉ ਲਾਖ ਮਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਯਉ ॥

In the Fear of God, You enjoy the Fearless Lord; among the thousands of beings, You see the Unseen Lord.

ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗਤਿ ਗਭੀਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਪਰਚਾਯਉ ॥

Through the True Guru, You have realized the state of the Inaccessible, Unfathomable, Profound Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਮਾਯਉ ॥

Meeting with the Guru, You are certified and approved; You practice Yoga in the midst of wealth and power.

ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੰਨਿ ਅਭਰ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰਾਯਉ ॥

Blessed, blessed, blessed is the Guru, who has filled to overflowing the pools which were empty.

ਗੁਰ ਗਮ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰਿਓ ਸਰਿ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਮਾਇਯਉ ॥

Reaching up to the certified Guru, You endure the unendurable; You are immersed in the pool of contentment.

ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯੁਚਰੈ ਤੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਾਇਯਉ ॥੮॥

So speaks KALL: O Guru Arjun, You have intuitively attained the state of Yoga within Yourself. ||8||”

Nectar (Sweet Bani) drops from Your tongue, Blessings flow from Your mouth, and You are the Indescribable, Infinite, Spiritual Hero, whose Shabad eradicates egotism. You have overpowered the five enticers and the Absolute Lord dwells within Your own being. As one enshrines the Satguru (Shabad) within the heart, the world is saved by attaching to the Lord’s Name. Kalasahar the poet says, Guru Arjun Ji, the Divine Light of Wisdom shines in Yourself. Sawaiyya 9 ends here.

“ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸਨਾ ਬਦਨਿ ਬਰ ਦਾਤਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਾਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥

Nectar drips from Your tongue, and Your mouth gives Blessings, O Incomprehensible and Infinite Spiritual Hero. O Guru, the Word of Your Shabad eradicates egotism.

ਪੰਚਾਹਰੁ ਨਿਦਲਿਅਉ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਸਹਾਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥

You have overpowered the five enticers, and established with intuitive ease the Absolute Lord within Your own being.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਜਗ ਉਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਾਇਅਉ ॥

Attached to the Lord’s Name, the world is saved; enshrine the True Guru within your heart.

ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯੁਚਰੈ ਤੈ ਜਨਕਹ ਕਲਸੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਅਉ ॥੯॥

So speaks KALL: O Guru Arjun, You have illuminated the highest pinnacle of wisdom. ||9||”

The heading “Sarothay’’ appears next. There are 3 Sorathay by Bhatt Kalasahar Ji. A Soratha Sawaiyya is where the rhyme of the Sawaiyya appears in the middle of the Sawaiyya.

The 1st Soratha says the Shabad Guru Arjun Ji is like Arjuna (of the Mahabharata) who never misses his mark. He has Naam as His Spear and Target, and the Satgur (Arjun) is Purified by the Shabad (Naam, God).

The rhyme of this 1st Soratha lies in ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ (1st line) and this rhymes with ਨੀਸਾਣੁ  (2nd line). The numbering here is //1//.

“ਸੋਰਠੇ ॥

Sorat’h

ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ ਪਾਰਥਉ ਚਾਲੈ ਨਹੀ ॥

Guru Arjun is the certified Primal Person; like Arjuna, He never leaves the field of battle.

ਨੇਜਾ ਨਾਮ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਅਉ ॥੧॥

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is His spear and insignia. He is embellished with the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru. ||1||”

The 2nd Soratha says, (Guru Arjun Ji) is the Bridge over the terrifying world ocean and the Lord’s Name is the Boat to cross over. As one enshrines love with the Satguru (Shabad), Naam saves the world. 

The rhyme of this Soratha is at ਸੇਤੁ, in the 1st line, with ਹੇਤੁ, in the second line.

“ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਸੇਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੀ ਕਾ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ॥

The Lord’s Name is the Boat, the Bridge to cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਤੁਅ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰ ਹੇਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਧਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ॥੨॥

You are in love with the True Guru; attached to the Naam, You have saved the world. ||2||”

The 3rd Soratha says, as the Satguru gets Pleased, the world receives Naam, which will save it. Bhatt Ji says, I am not concerned with anything else (besides Naam) as standing at Your Door, all my wishes are fulfilled.

The rhyme of the 3rd Soratha is with ਨਾਮੁ in the 1st line together with the ਕਾਮੁ in the 2nd line.

“ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਇਅਉ ॥

The Naam is the Saving Grace of the world; by the Pleasure of the True Guru, it is obtained.

ਅਬ ਨਾਹਿ ਅਵਰ ਸਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਬਾਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਪੜੀ ॥੩॥੧੨॥

Now, I am not concerned with anything else; at Your Door, I am fulfilled. ||3||12||”

 

The numbering here is //3//12// indicating 3 Sorathay and 12 Sawaiyye by Bhatt Kalasahar Ji, so far.

Next, there are 7 Sawaiyye by Bhatt Mathura Ji.

In his 1st Sawaiyya, Bhatt Ji says The Embodiment of Divine Light of the Lord is called Guru Nanak Ji. From Him, came Guru Angad Ji and the Divine Essence was mixed into the Essence (of Guru Angad Dev Ji). By the Grace of Angad, was established the Shabad Roop, Guru Amardas Ji (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ). Guru Amardas Ji blessed Guru Ramdas Ji with the Divine Umbrella of Immortality. 

Mathura Bhatt Ji says, by gazing upon the Blessed Vision of Guru Ramdas  Ji, His (Guru Arjun Dev Ji) speech became as sweet as nectar. Now, gaze with your own eyes upon the Blessed Fifth Form (Shabad) of Guru Arjun Dev Ji. 

“ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹਾਯਉ ॥

The Embodiment of Light, the Lord Himself is called Guru Nanak.

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਗਦੁ ਭਯਉ ਤਤ ਸਿਉ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਯਉ ॥

From Him, came Guru Angad; His essence was absorbed into the essence.

ਅੰਗਦਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੀਅਉ ॥

Guru Angad showed His Mercy, and established Amar Daas as the True Guru.

ਅਮਰਦਾਸਿ ਅਮਰਤੁ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਹਿ ਦੀਅਉ ॥

Guru Amar Daas blessed Guru Raam Daas with the umbrella of immortality.

ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਕਹਿ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਯਣ ॥

So speaks Mat’huraa: gazing upon the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of Guru Raam Daas, His speech became as sweet as nectar.

ਮੂਰਤਿ ਪੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਪਿਖਹੁ ਨਯਣ ॥੧॥

With your eyes, see the certified Primal Person, Guru Arjun, the Fifth Manifestation of the Guru. ||1||”

The numbering here is //1//, indicating this is the 1st Sawaiyya by Bhatt Mathura Ji.

Sawaiyya no. 2 says Guru Arjun Ji is the Embodiment of Truth, and has enshrined the Name and Contentment in His heart. Such is His destiny written on His forehead, by the Primal Being. Meeting the Mystical Guru (Shabad), He was acclaimed as Guru.

Bhatt Mathura Ji proclaims that I constantly focus my consciousness on the Ever Stable (Guru Arjun Ji) and remain in His Divine Presence. In this Dark Age of Kalyug, Guru Arjun Ji is the Boat, and the entire Universe can swim across by attaching itself to Guru Arjun Ji. //2//.

“ਸਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਧਰਿਓ ਉਰਿ ॥

He is the Embodiment of Truth; He has enshrined the True Name, Sat Naam, Truth and contentment within His heart.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਲਿਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਅਛਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ॥

From the very beginning, the Primal Being has written this destiny upon His forehead.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਮਗੈ ਤੇਜੁ ਭੂਅ ਮੰਡਲਿ ਛਾਯਉ ॥

His Divine Light shines forth, dazzling and radiant; His Glorious Grandeur pervades the realms of the world.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਾਯਉ ॥

Meeting the Guru, touching the Philosopher’s Stone, He was acclaimed as Guru.

ਭਨਿ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਹੁ ॥

So speaks Mat’huraa: I constantly focus my consciousness on Him; as sunmukh, I look to Him.

ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਜਹਾਜੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਲਗਿ ਬਿਤਰਹੁ ॥੨॥

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, Guru Arjun is the Boat; attached to him, the entire universe is safely carried across. ||2||”

I beg from that humble being, who is known the world over, as being enamored of the Name, night and day. He is Supremely detached, drenched in the love of Naam, but in actual fact, he lives as a householder with his family. He is dedicated to the Love of the Infinite, Limitless, Primal Lord, and He finds joy only in His Love for God. The Shabad Roop Guru Arjun Ji is the Master of Mathura; He always has Saintly Love for the All Pervading Lord. //3//.

“ਤਿਹ ਜਨ ਜਾਚਹੁ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਪਰ ਜਾਨੀਅਤੁ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਰਯਨਿ ਬਾਸੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਹਿਤੁ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥

I beg from that humble being who is known all over the world, who lives in, and loves the Name, night and day.

ਪਰਮ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗ੍ਯ੍ਯੌ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੈ ਦੇਖੀਅਤੁ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥

He is supremely unattached, and imbued with the Love of the Transcendent Lord; he is free of desire, but he lives as a family man.

ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਾਗ੍ਯ੍ਯੌ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਉਰੈ ਕਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥

He is dedicated to the Love of the Infinite, Limitless Primal Lord God; he has no concerns for any other pleasure, except for the Lord God.

ਮਥੁਰਾ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਮਯ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥੩॥

Guru Arjun is the All-pervading Lord God of Mat’huraa. Devoted to His Worship, he remains attached to the Lord’s Feet. ||3||”

All the devas, silent sages, Indra, Shiva and the yogis have not found the Lord’s limits. Not even Brahma who contemplates the Vedas. Guru Arjun Ji does not give up meditating on the Lord even for an instant. Bhatt Mathura says, the Lord who is Merciful to the humble and uplifts the sanggats throughout the Universe. Guru Ramdas Ji, to save the world, enshrined the Guru’s Divine Light of Enlightenment (Jote) into Guru Arjun Dev Ji. //4//.

“ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਤ ਦੇਵ ਸਬੈ ਮੁਨਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਮਹਾ ਸਿਵ ਜੋਗ ਕਰੀ ॥

All the gods, silent sages, Indra, Shiva and Yogis have not found the Lord’s limits –

ਫੁਨਿ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਰੰਚਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੁ ਨ ਛਾਡ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਉ ਏਕ ਘਰੀ ॥

not even Brahma who contemplates the Vedas. I shall not give up meditating on the Lord, even for an instant.

ਮਥੁਰਾ ਜਨ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੀਨ ਦਯਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ਕਰੀ ॥

The God of Mat’huraa is Merciful to the meek; He blesses and uplifts the Sangats throughout the Universe.

ਰਾਮਦਾਸਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗ ਤਾਰਨ ਕਉ ਗੁਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੪॥

Guru Raam Daas, to save the world, enshrined the Guru’s Light into Guru Arjun. ||4||”

In the great darkness of this world, it was the Lord Himself who manifested as Divine Light in the Guru. Bhatt Mathura says, millions of pains are removed from those who drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of Naam.

O mortal being, do not leave this path (of Naam). Do not ever think there is any difference between God and Guru (Shabad). It is clear for all to see that the Perfect Lord dwells in the heart of Guru Arjun Ji. //5//.

“ਜਗ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਯਾਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਤਮ ਮੈ ਅਵਤਾਰੁ ਉਜਾਗਰੁ ਆਨਿ ਕੀਅਉ ॥

In the great darkness of this world, the Lord revealed Himself, incarnated as Guru Arjun.

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਕੋਟਿਕ ਦੂਰਿ ਗਏ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੀਅਉ ॥

Millions of pains are taken away, from those who drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, says Mat’huraa.

ਇਹ ਪਧਤਿ ਤੇ ਮਤ ਚੂਕਹਿ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਭੇਦੁ ਬਿਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨ ਬੀਅਉ ॥

O mortal being, do not leave this path; do not think that there is any difference between God and Guru.

ਪਰਤਛਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਲੀਅਉ ॥੫॥

The Perfect Lord God has manifested Himself; He dwells in the heart of Guru Arjun. ||5||”

 

So long as the destiny written upon my forehead did not manifest, I wandered around lost, in many directions. I was drowning in the horrible world ocean of this Dark Age, and I lived in deep regret. I have now realised this Essential Truth, that the Lord sends Saints to save the world. Anyone who meditates on Guru Arjun Dev Ji (Shabad Roop), will not have to pass through the painful womb of reincarnation ever again.

“ਜਬ ਲਉ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਲਾਰ ਉਦੈ ਤਬ ਲਉ ਭ੍ਰਮਤੇ ਫਿਰਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਯਉ ॥

As long as the destiny written upon my forehead was not activated, I wandered around lost, running in all directions.

ਕਲਿ ਘੋਰ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰ ਮੈ ਬੂਡਤ ਥੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਮਿਟਿ ਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਯਉ ॥

I was drowning in the horrible world-ocean of this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, and my remorse would never have ended.

ਤਤੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ਯਹੈ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਜਗ ਤਾਰਨ ਕਉ ਅਵਤਾਰੁ ਬਨਾਯਉ ॥

O Mat’huraa, consider this essential truth: to save the world, the Lord incarnated Himself.

ਜਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਦੇਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਫਿਰਿ ਸੰਕਟ ਜੋਨਿ ਗਰਭ ਨ ਆਯਉ ॥੬॥

Whoever meditates on Guru Arjun Dayv, shall not have to pass through the painful womb of reincarnation ever again. ||6||”

In the ocean of this Dark Age of Kalyug, the Lord’s Name has been revealed in the Form of Guru Arjun Ji (Shabad), to save the world.  In whose heart this Naam abides, pain and poverty are taken away from that person. The Lord is Pure, Immaculate and in Infinite Forms. Besides Him, there is none other. One who realises Him in thought, word and deed, becomes just like Him. His Divine Light pervades the earth, the sky, and the nine regions of the planet. Mathura Bhatt declares there is no difference between the Guru and God, and I see Guru Arjun Ji (Shabad Roop) as the Personification of the Lord Himself. 

“ਕਲਿ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰ ਭਏ ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਉਧਾਰਨੁ ॥

In the ocean of this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Lord’s Name has been revealed in the Form of Guru Arjun, to save the world.

ਬਸਹਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਨਿਵਾਰਨੁ ॥

Pain and poverty are taken away from that person, within whose heart the Saint abides.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭੇਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਤਾਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

He is the Pure, Immaculate Form of the Infinite Lord; except for Him, there is no other at all.

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਣਿਅਉ ਭਯਉ ਤਿਹ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

Whoever knows Him in thought, word and deed, becomes just like Him.

ਧਰਨਿ ਗਗਨ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਭਰਿ ॥

He is totally pervading the earth, the sky and the nine regions of the planet. He is the Embodiment of the Light of God.

ਭਨਿ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਕਛੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਪਰਤਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਹਰਿ ॥੭॥੧੯॥

So speaks Mat’huraa: there is no difference between God and Guru; Guru Arjun is the Personification of the Lord Himself. ||7||19||”

The numbering is //7//19// indicating that there are 7 Sawaiyya by Bhatt Mathura Ji, and the total Sawaiyye so far, are 19. 

The 1st Sawaiyya by Bhatt Harbans Ji says, The Invisible Pure Eternal Water of Naam flows and Sikh sanggat bathe in it. The Puranas recite His Naam, and the Brahma sings His Praises. The Invincible Royal Whisk waves over His head, and He recites the Amrit Naam from His mouth. The Lord Himself, blessed Guru Arjun Ji with a Royal Canopy over His head. Guru Nanak Ji, Guru Angad Ji, Guru Amardas Ji and Guru Ramdas Ji met the Lord. Bhatt Harbans says, their Praises resound all over the world. Who can ever say the Great Gurus (Shabad Roop) are dead? //1//.

“ਅਜੈ ਗੰਗ ਜਲੁ ਅਟਲੁ ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਭ ਨਾਵੈ ॥

The stream of the Lord’s Name flows like the Ganges, invincible and unstoppable. The Sikhs of the Sangat all bathe in it.

ਨਿਤ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਬਾਚੀਅਹਿ ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

It appears as if the holy texts like the Puraanaas are being recited there and Brahma himself sings the Vedas.

ਅਜੈ ਚਵਰੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਢੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੀਅਉ ॥

The invincible chauri, the fly-brush, waves over His head; with His mouth, He drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam.

ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਦੀਅਉ ॥

The Transcendent Lord Himself has placed the royal canopy over the head of Guru Arjun.

ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦ ਅਮਰ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਹਿ ਗਯਉ ॥

Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Daas and Guru Raam Daas met together before the Lord.

ਹਰਿਬੰਸ ਜਗਤਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੰਚਰ੍ਯ੍ਯਉ ਸੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੁਯਉ ॥੧॥

So speaks HARBANS: Their Praises echo and resound all over the world; who can possibly say that the Great Gurus are dead? ||1||”

Following the Will of the Lord, Guru Ramdas Ji went to the City of God (Sachkhand). The Lord offered Him a Royal Throne and seated the Guru (Shabad Roop) upon it. The angels and devas were delighted and sang of the Glory of the Guru. The demons ran away, and the sins within them trembled. The mortals who found Guru Ramdas Ji (Shabad Roop) were rid of their sins. Guru Ramdas Ji passed on the Royal Canopy and Throne of the world to Guru Arjun Dev Ji.

“ਦੇਵ ਪੁਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਗਯਉ ਆਪਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਭਾਯਉ ॥

When it was the Will of the Transcendent Lord Himself, Guru Raam Daas went to the City of God.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣੁ ਦੀਅਉ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਹ ਬੈਠਾਯਉ ॥

The Lord offered Him His Royal Throne, and seated the Guru upon it.

ਰਹਸੁ ਕੀਅਉ ਸੁਰ ਦੇਵ ਤੋਹਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਯ ਜਯ ਜੰਪਹਿ ॥

The angels and gods were delighted; they proclaimed and celebrated Your victory, O Guru.

ਅਸੁਰ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਪ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੰਪਹਿ ॥

The demons ran away; their sins made them shake and tremble inside.

ਕਾਟੇ ਸੁ ਪਾਪ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨਰਹੁ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪਾਇਯਉ ॥

Those people who found Guru Raam Daas were rid of their sins.

ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਪਿਰਥਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਆਇਅਉ ॥੨॥੨੧॥੯॥੧੧॥੧੦॥੧੦॥੨੨॥੬੦॥੧੪੩॥

He gave the Royal Canopy and Throne to Guru Arjun, and came home. ||2||21||9||11||10||10||22||60||143||”

The numbering here at the  conclusion of all the Sawaiyye is //2//21//9//11//10//10//22//60//143.

2 is the number of Sawaiyye by Bhatt Harbans, 21 is the total of Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Arjun Ji.

9 is the number of the first set of Sawaiyye of Sawaiyye Sri Mukhbaky Mehla Panjva.

11 is the number of Sawaiyye of the second set of Sawaiyye of Sawaiyye Sri Mukhbaky Mehle Panjva.

10 is the total Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

10 is the total Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Angad Dev Ji.

22 is the total Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Amardas Ji.

60 is the total Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Ramdas Ji.

143 is the grand total of all the Sawaiyye.
