Raag Bhairo – Bhagat Namdev Ji.

Bhagat Namdev Ji has some Shabads where he describes how he was badly treated by the pandits in the mandir. He was abused and thrown out of the mandir, as the pandits said he was of low caste. The great Bhagat sat outside the mandir, spoke about his plight to God, and expressed this Shabad.

In a cheerful mood, full of gaiety, I came to Your mandir; as I was engaged in prayer, I was grabbed and driven out.

“Hasstt khelat Tere dwarey aaya; bhagat karat Nama pakad chalaeya.”

I am of low social class, Lord; why was I born into a family of (low caste) fabric dyers?

“Hinri jaat meri Jaadam Raiya; chippay ke janam kahe ko aaya.” (rahao)

I picked my blanket and went to the back (of the mandir); and sat down there.

“Leh kamli chaliyo paltaye; deohre pache betha jaye.”

As Namdev recited the Glorious Praises of the Lord; the mandir turned to face Your humble Saint.

“Jio jio Nama Har gunn uchre; bhagat janna ko deohra firey.”

A medley of well known ragis sing many Shabads, all relating to Bhagat Namdev Ji.

Bhagat Ji was a shudra, a low caste tailor, washerman.

He was drenched in Naam. As he reached the Aundha Nagnath mandir, he went in. The Pandits there saw his clothes. He had no janaeu, no sacred marks worn by Brahmins and Pandits.

Bhagat Ji was beaten and shoved out of the mandir. As he sat outside, behind the mandir, he Sang God’s Praises.

As he did so (jio jio Nama Har Gunn uchre), the mandir (dehora) was physically uprooted and turned around. (Bhagat janna ko dehora firhe).

The front steps of the mandir now faced Bhagat Ji.

When you make a trip to Hazur Sahib, make it a point to visit this mandir. It is about 40 plus km away and it takes a full day trip back and forth.

The Pandits running the mandir are not too friendly to Sikhs as the mandir is a slap to them and the rejection of their orthodox ways and caste system.

Hindu mandirs face the rising sun. The mandir faces the setting sun as it has been turned.

The area to wash your feet before you go in, is at the back of the mandir now.

As the mandir was yanked off it’s foundation and turned around, it just rests on the ground. As the ground is slightly uneven, you can slide a piece of paper or some thin matter under the mandir as it has no pillars which embed it into the ground.
In all the Shabads, Bhagat Ji does not claim he turned the mandir around. He says it was God who intervened to save the laaj of His Bhagat.
