Bhatt Sawaiyye-Sawaiyye Mehle Dujje Ke

(SGGS Ang 1391-1392)

Guru Angad Dev Ji was born on 31st March 1504 at Matte di Sarai, which is near Muktsar Sahib. His father’s name was Pheru Mal and mother was Daya Kaur. Guru Ji was from the Trehan Khatri clan.

Bhai Pheru Mal and his family shifted to Khadur Sahib, a village by the river Beas, near Taran Taran. In his late 20’s Bhai Lehna Ji met Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Kartarpur, and spent almost 7 years in Guru Ji’s sewa and sanggat.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji embraced Bhai Lehna Ji and renamed Him as Angad (literally, my limb) and anointed Guru Angad Ji as 2nd Satguru of the Sikhs on 7th September 1539.

Guru Ji has 62 Sloks in SGGS Ji.

There are 10 Sawaiyye in Praise of Guru Angad Dev Ji, by Bhatt Kalasahar Ji.

In Pada no. 1, Bhatt Ji starts with Praise of God. Blessed is the Primal Lord God, the Creator, All Powerful cause of causes. Blessed is the Satguru Nanak Ji who placed His hands upon Your forehead. As He lovingly placed His hands upon Your (Guru Angad Dev Ji) forehead, celestial nectar (of Naam) poured in torrents, and the devas, humans, heavenly heralds and sages were drenched in the fragrance of Naam.

(Guru Angad Dev Ji), You bravely slew the cruel demon of death, restrained the wandering mind, overpowered the five demons, and contained them in one home. Remaining at the Door of Your Guru, You conquered the world, acted fairly always, and the loving focus of Your higher consciousness was always on the Formless Lord.

“ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ਕਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੋ ॥

Blessed is the Primal Lord God, the Creator, the All-powerful Cause of causes.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਧੰਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤੁਮ ਧਰਿਓ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਥੋ ॥

Blessed is the True Guru Nanak, who placed His hand upon Your forehead.

ਤ ਧਰਿਓ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਅਮਿਉ ਵੁਠਉ ਛਜਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਗਣ ਮੁਨਿ ਬੋਹਿਯ ਅਗਾਜਿ ॥

When He placed His hand upon Your forehead, then the celestial nectar began to rain down in torrents; the gods and human beings, heavenly heralds and sages were drenched in its fragrance.

ਮਾਰਿਓ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਗਰਜਿ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਲੀਓ ਬਰਜਿ ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਏਕ ਘਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਸਮਜਿ ॥

You challenged and subdued the cruel demon of death; You restrained Your wandering mind; You overpowered the five demons and You keep them in one home.

ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਉ ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਖੇਲਹਿ ਸਮਤ ਸਾਰਿ ਰਥੁ ਉਨਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਰਾਖਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ॥

Through the Guru’s Door, the Gurdwara, You have conquered the world; You play the game even-handedly. You keep the flow of your love steady for the Formless Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

In Pada no. 2, Bhatt Ji says from Guru Angad Dev Ji’s kind Glance of Grace spring forth Ambrosial nectar and this washes away the slime and filth of sins; the mere sight of His Door (Shabad), dispels the darkness of ignorance. Anyone who accomplishes the most difficult task of contemplating upon the Sublime Shabad, their load of sin is cut off and they cross over the terrifying world ocean.

Satsanggat is Celestial and Sublime and anyone who reflects on the Guru’s Shabad becomes awakened internally. Such humble ones are blessed with eternal Love for the Lord.

“ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ਕਾਲੁਖ ਖਨਿ ਉਤਾਰ ਤਿਮਰ ਅਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਰਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

The Stream of Ambrosial Nectar from His eyes washes away the slime and filth of sins; the sight of His door dispels the darkness of ignorance.

ਓਇ ਜੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਬਿਖਮ ਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਭਵ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਨਿਰਭਾਰ ॥

Whoever accomplishes this most difficult task of contemplating the most sublime Word of the Shabad – those people cross over the terrifying world-ocean, and cast off their loads of sin.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸਾਰਿ ਜਾਗੀਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਰੀ ਭੂਤ ਸਦੀਵ ਪਰਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

The Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, is celestial and sublime; whoever remains awake and aware, contemplating the Guru, embodies humility, and is imbued forever with the Supreme Love of the Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

Pada no. 3 is addressed directly to Guru Angad Dev Ji. You hold tight to Pure Naam, the entire expanse You oversee is rendered Immaculate (by Your Glance of Grace). You are the Support of the Siddhas and seekers, of all decent, humble beings. You are verily the reincarnation of king Janak, Your Shabad (Bani) is Sovereign throughout the Universe, and You abide in the world, detached, like the Lotus on the waters.

You are the Wish Fulfilling Tree to destroy all diseases and You eliminate the sufferings of the world, Your three phased inner being (mann, bach, karam) is lovingly attuned to the One Lord.

“ਤੈ ਤਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਬਿਮਲ ਜਾਸੁ ਬਿਥਾਰੁ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਸੁਜਨ ਜੀਆ ਕੋ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥

You hold tight to the Naam, the Name of the Infinite Lord; Your expanse is immaculate. You are the Support of the Siddhas and seekers, and the good and humble beings.

ਤੂ ਤਾ ਜਨਿਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਉਤਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਾਰੁ ਰਹਹਿ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਪਦਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

You are the incarnation of King Janak; the contemplation of Your Shabad is sublime throughout the universe. You abide in the world like the lotus on the water.

ਕਲਿਪ ਤਰੁ ਰੋਗ ਬਿਦਾਰੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ ਆਤਮਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥

Like the Elysian Tree, You cure all illnesses and take away the sufferings of the world. The three-phased soul is lovingly attuned to You alone.

ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

Bhatt Ji continues the Praises of Bhai Lehna Ji in Pada no. 4. You were blessed with glory by the Prophet (Guru Nanak Dev Ji). You served the Divine (Shabad) Guru, subdued the huge snake (python) of the mind, and are always in the highest state of Spiritual Bliss. Your Glance is like the Glance of the Lord Himself, You are a Fount of Spiritual Wisdom, You have experienced and know the Unfathomable State of the Divine Guru. You are focused on the Eternal Place of the Lord, and Your Wisdom is Pure. Wearing the armor of sweetness and humility, You have overcome maya.

“ਤੈ ਤਾ ਹਦਰਥਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਮਾਨੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ਸਾਧਿ ਅਜਗਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਉਨਮਾਨੁ ॥

You were blessed with glory by the Prophet; You serve the Guru, certified by the Lord, who has subdued the snake of the mind, and who abides in the state of sublime bliss.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਸਮਾਨ ਆਤਮਾ ਵੰਤਗਿਆਨ ਜਾਣੀਅ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਵਾਨ ॥

Your Vision is like that of the Lord, Your soul is a fount of spiritual wisdom; You know the unfathomable state of the certified Guru.

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਅਚਲ ਠਾਣ ਬਿਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਥਾਨ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਸੀਲ ਸਨਾਹੁ ਸਕਤਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ॥

Your Gaze is focused upon the unmoving, unchanging place. Your Intellect is immaculate; it is focused upon the most sublime place. Wearing the armor of humility, you have overcome Maya.

ਕਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਲ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਮਝਾਰ ਲਹਣਾ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

O Kal Sakaar, chant the Praises of Lehnaa throughout the seven continents; He met with the Lord, and became Guru of the World. ||4||”

In Pada no. 5, Bhatt Ji says, Your Glance of Grace dispel darkness (ignorance), burns away evil, and destroys sin. Whatever You say comes True and Your Shabad (Bani), destroys lust and anger. You nurture and cherish those who come to Your Sanctuary, and You overpower all greed and emotional attachment. You help others to gather inner joy of the soul, and Your Words have the Potency of Ambrosial nectar.

You were anointed as the True Guru in this dark age of kalyug, and whoever is attached to You is carried across.

Guru Angad Ji, the (Shabad) Guru of the world is the lion-like son of Pheru (in Punjabi – Sher Puttar), and Bhai Lehna Ji lives in Raj Yog (where one is totally connected with God, and rules over the world).

“ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਧਰਤ ਤਮ ਹਰਨ ਦਹਨ ਅਘ ਪਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਨਾਸਨ ॥

Casting Your Glance of Grace, you dispel the darkness, burn away evil, and destroy sin.

ਸਬਦ ਸੂਰ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਮ ਅਰੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ॥

You are the Heroic Warrior of the Shabad, the Word of God. Your Power destroys sexual desire and anger.

ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਣ ਸਰਣ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਣ ॥

You have overpowered greed and emotional attachment; You nurture and cherish those who seek Your Sanctuary.

ਆਤਮ ਰਤ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਹਣ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਲ ਢਾਲਣ ॥

You gather in the joyful love of the soul; Your Words have the Potency to bring forth Ambrosial Nectar.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਸਤਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਪੈ ਤਰੈ ॥

You are appointed the True Guru, the True Guru in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga; whoever is truly attached to You is carried across.

ਗੁਰੁ ਜਗਤ ਫਿਰਣਸੀਹ ਅੰਗਰਉ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਲਹਣਾ ਕਰੈ ॥੫॥

The lion, the son of Pheru, is Guru Angad, the Guru of the World; Lehnaa practices Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success. ||5||”

In Pada no. 6, Bhatt Ji says, Guru Ji, Your mind is lovingly attuned to the Lord, forever, and You act Independently, as it Pleases You. As a tree heavily laden with fruits, You bow in humility and being Pure of thought, endure everything without complaint. You have realised His Essence, that the Lord is all Pervading, Beyond Fathom and Amazing. With Poise and Love, You spray the rays of Powerful Amrit Bani to all. Uniting with the Guru (Shabad), You possess the Divine Qualities of Truth and Contentment. 

Kalasahar the Bhatt declares, the humble ones who are blessed to have Bhai Lehna Ji’s Darshan, meet the Lord.

 

“ਸਦਾ ਅਕਲ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੈ ਕਰਨ ਸਿਉ ਇਛਾ ਚਾਰਹ ॥

Your mind remains lovingly attuned to the Lord forever; You do whatever you desire.

ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਸਪੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਵੈ ਖਵੈ ਕਸੁ ਬਿਮਲ ਬੀਚਾਰਹ ॥

Like the tree heavy with fruit, You bow in humility, and endure the pain of it; You are pure of thought.

ਇਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਜਾਣਿਓ ਸਰਬ ਗਤਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਬਿਡਾਣੀ ॥

You realize this reality, that the Lord is All-pervading, Unseen and Amazing.

ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਸੰਚਿਓ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਲ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

With intuitive ease, You send forth the rays of the Ambrosial Word of power.

ਗੁਰ ਗਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ ਤੈ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗ੍ਰਾਹਜਿ ਲਯੌ ॥

You have risen to the state of the certified Guru; you grasp truth and contentment.

ਹਰਿ ਪਰਸਿਓ ਕਲੁ ਸਮੁਲਵੈ ਜਨ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਲਹਣੇ ਭਯੌ ॥੬॥

KAL proclaims, that whoever attains the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of Lehnaa, meets with the Lord. ||6||”

 

In Pada no. 7, Bhatt Ji says, You had firm faith and the Prophet (Guru Nanak Ji) United You with the Profound Lord. As You drank in Ambrosia (Amrit Naam), Your body was purged of all deadly poison (of maya).  

In Your heart, love for the Unseen Lord blossomed; the Lord whose Power has prevailed throughout the ages. You are the Satguru (Shabad) in Peaceful Union with God, Permeating all continually, and reside deep within their nucleus. You are Generous of Heart, Destroyer of poverty, and Your Darshan destroys all sins.  

Kalasahar, lovingly, continually, Sings the Praises of Bhai Lehna Ji with his tongue.

 

“ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਗਹਰਿ ਗਹੁ ਹਦਰਥਿ ਦੀਓ ॥

My mind has faith, that the Prophet has given You access to the Profound Lord.

ਗਰਲ ਨਾਸੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਠਯੋ ਅਮਿਉ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਪੀਓ ॥

Your body has been purged of the deadly poison; You drink the Ambrosial Nectar deep within.

ਰਿਦਿ ਬਿਗਾਸੁ ਜਾਗਿਓ ਅਲਖਿ ਕਲ ਧਰੀ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ॥

Your Heart has blossomed forth in awareness of the Unseen Lord, who has infused His Power throughout the ages.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਰਵਿਓ ਸਾਮਾਨਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ॥

O True Guru, You are intuitively absorbed in Samaadhi, with continuity and equality.

ਉਦਾਰਉ ਚਿਤ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਹਰਨ ਪਿਖੰਤਿਹ ਕਲਮਲ ਤ੍ਰਸਨ ॥

You are open-minded and large-hearted, the Destroyer of poverty; seeing You, sins are afraid.

ਸਦ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਕਲੁ ਉਚਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਜੰਪਉ ਲਹਣੇ ਰਸਨ ॥੭॥

Says KAL, I lovingly, continually, intuitively chant the Praises of Lehnaa with my tongue. ||7||”

 

In Pada no. 8, Bhatt Ji describes what is used by Guru Angad Dev Ji. Naam is His Medicine, Naam is His Support, Naam is His Flag and Insignia. Guru Ji is coloured with deep love for Naam, and in this age of kalyug, only Naam brings fragrance to the devas and mortals. It was with Naam that Bhai Lehna Ji met the Lord and became eternally manifest and radiant throughout the world. Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Guru (Shabad), one gets the purification of bathing at the sixty eight shrines of pilgrimages.

 

“ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is our medicine; the Naam is our support; the Naam is the peace of Samaadhi. The Naam is the insignia which embellishes us forever.

ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੌ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਕਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰਹ ਬੋਹੈ ॥

KAL is imbued with the Love of the Naam, the Naam which is the fragrance of gods and human beings.

ਨਾਮ ਪਰਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਓ ਰਵਿ ਲੋਇ ॥

Whoever obtains the Naam, the Philosopher’s Stone, becomes the embodiment of Truth, manifest and radiant throughout the world.

ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥

Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Guru’s Darshan, it is as if one has bathed at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||8||”

 

In Pada no. 9, Bhatt Ji describes Bhai Lehna Ji as Guru. Guru Ji is the True Sacred Shrine, bathing in His Bani (Shabad) is the True cleansing bath. Naam from the Guru is the True Food, and True honor is received by reciting the True Name. This Naam is obtained from the Guru’s Shabad, and Naam gives True Fragrance to the Sanggat. In this age of kalyug, Kalasahar the poet declares the Praises of One who has True self discipline and practices Truth. Gazing upon the blessed Vision of the Guru (Shabad), life becomes purified and Approved (in the Lord’s Court).

 

“ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਸਚੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਅਰੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਖੰਤੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥

The True Name is the sacred shrine, the True Name is the cleansing bath of purification and food. The True Name is eternal love; chant the True Name, and be embellished.

ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਬੋਹੈ ॥

The True Name is obtained through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad; the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, is fragrant with the True Name.

ਜਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਵਰਤੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਬਿ ਜਨ ਕਲ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥

KAL the poet utters the Praises of the one whose self-discipline is the True Name, and whose fast is the True Name.

ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੯॥

Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Guru’s Darshan, one’s life is approved and certified in the True Name. ||9||”

 

In Pada no. 10, Bhatt Ji says when Guru Angad Dev Ji bestows His Ambrosial Glance of Grace, all wickedness and filth is eradicated. You overpower the powerful passions of lust, anger, greed and emotional attachment. You bestow eternal peace in all minds and banish the sufferings of the world. The Guru (Shabad) is a flowing river of nine treasures (Naam), which washes off the dirt of our lives. Transform yourself by lovingly serving the Guru (Shabad). When one gazes upon the blessed Vision of the Guru (Shabad Jote), all the pains of death and rebirth are removed.

 

“ਅਮਿਅ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸੁਭ ਕਰੈ ਹਰੈ ਅਘ ਪਾਪ ਸਕਲ ਮਲ ॥

When You bestow Your Ambrosial Glance of Grace, You eradicate all wickedness, sin and filth.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਵਸਿ ਕਰੈ ਸਭੈ ਬਲ ॥

Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment – You have overcome all these powerful passions.

ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

Your mind is filled with peace forever; You banish the sufferings of the world.

ਗੁਰੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਜਨਮ ਹਮ ਕਾਲਖ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

The Guru is the river of the nine treasures, washing off the dirt of our lives.

ਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਟਲ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

So speaks TAL the poet: serve the Guru, day and night, with intuitive love and affection.

ਦਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Guru, the pains of death and rebirth are taken away. ||10||”

 

Although the pen name Tal is used in the 10th Pada, the numbering “10” does not indicate any change of Bhatt, so it is taken that Tal is also one of the pen names of Bhatt Kalasahar Ji.
