Sawaiyee
Bhatt Mathura Ji has 14 swaiyyas in praise of the Gurus.
Seven of Mathura Ji’s swaiyyas are in praise of Guru Ramdas Ji whilst the other seven are in praise of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.
The Bhatts were blessed Brahmin poets and saints mostly from the Sultanpur area.
They were very familiar with the teachings of the Gurus and adored the Panth led by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Their swaiyyas contain delightful references to Hindu mythology but a deep insight into the swaiyyas shows the Bhatt Sahibans had absolute faith in Gurbani and Nirankar.
For many years there was great dispute as to the number of Bhatts. The older Sikh scholars have different numbers. Some believed there were 27, others 19, some 17. The Bhatts often used their pen names in their compositions. Some had more than one nom de plume. For purposes of rhyme, they used different names.
It was only around 1930 or so that the issue was settled. The authors of the Shabad Arth looked closely at the numbering system that had been put in by Guru Arjun Dev Ji. It became clear that there were 11 Bhatt Sahibans, and that is the generally accepted number nowadays.
Bhatt Mathura Ji took part in the battles as a Sikh under the banner of Guru Hargobind Ji. The great Bhatt Mathura Ji died in the battle of Amritsar on 14th April 1634.
This is the 6th Swaiyya in praise of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.
“Jab lao nahi bhag lilar udai tab lao bharamte firta baho dhayao”
“Kal ghor samudar mai budat the kabhu mit hai nahi re pachhotayo”
“Tat bichar yahai Mathura jag taran kao avtar banayao”
“Japyao jinh Arjun Dev Guru fir sankat jon garabh na ayao.”
