Bibi Sharanjeet Kaur or Sharan Kaur lived about a kilometre away from Chamkaur Sahib.
There was fierce fighting going on as the thousands of Mughal soldiers surrounded the Garhi of Chamkaur. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, his two elder Sahibzade, and 3 of the panj pyare with about 40 Sikhs were inside.
Five Sikhs went out at a time, killed many Mughals and were killed themselves.
By nightfall an eerie silence fell upon the Chamkaur di Ghadi. Piles of dead bodies lay outside. It was a biting cold winter night and the Mughals huddled around a fire and for food in a makeshift camp about 200 yards away.
By 10pm Guru Gobind Singh and 2 pyaras had left the Ghadi.
It was about 1am. Bibi Sharan Kaur, 16 years old dressed to leave her house. Her mother blocked her way. Word had spread there were many dead bodies outside the Ghadi. Sharan Kaur felt she had to do shaskaar of the dead Sikhs including the two vadde Sahibzade.
She managed to evade her mother and rushed towards the Ghadi. It was about 2am now. She started gathering all Sikh bodies into a pile. She recognized them from their kakaars. It was an exhausting task for a young girl. After almost 2 hours, she sat down, read Kirtan Sohila and did Ardas. She then put fire to the pile. The clothes of the dead Sikhs easily caught fire and soon smoke could be seen.
The Mughals saw the smoke and could hardly believe anyone would have been brave enough to cremate the Sikhs, that too, a young Sikh girl.
They surrounded her and asked why she had cremated them. “These are my brothers and I did what was necessary to cremate them.”
The Mughals attacked her. She fought with her kirpan but was overcome. She was still alive when the Mughals threw bibi ji on the cremation fire.
“Jinna Singha Singhnia ne dharam het sees dittay, bandh bandh kataiye, khoprian lahaiya, charkhriya te chadhe, tann aariya naal charaiye gaye, Gurdwaraiya di sewa lehi kurbania kittian, Sikhi kesa suasaa naal nibhahi, tinna di kamayee da….”
It is important to know Sikh history.
