Garuda is a deva who has features of a giant bird. He is idolised in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

He is said to have powers to fly anywhere immediately, and has great physical strength. He is known as the vehicle (vahan) for Vishnu, the Hindu deva who is believed to take avtar in every yug.
Apart from his huge size, Garuda is the natural enemy of all snakes and they are terrified of him.

In Gurbani, Garuda is described just like other devas, who are created beings and who does not know the Mystery of the All Pervading Lord (Rameiya hoeya).

Bhagat Kabir Ji declares at Angg 691 that Garuda, just like the other devas, does not have Enlightenment about God.

“Hanuman sarr Garuda samaana; Surpat, Narpat nahi gunn jaana.”

At Angg 695, Bhagat Trilochan Ji gives many examples of devas and persons bound by their past good and bad actions. Bhagat Ji describes Arun (the deva who is reputed to be the charioteer of the sun), as a cripple. His crippled condition arose from his past actions and the fact that the very powerful Garuda was his brother made no difference.

Bhagat Ji describes Arun’s place as charioteer of Surya (the sun), and his relationship with the so-called powerful Garuda, King of all birds.

Only Naam can erase lekhas and karmas, and Bhagat Ji concludes the Shabad by saying:

“Purablo krit karam na mittay ri ghar gehan ta che mohi jaapile Raam ke Naamung.”

That is Garuda as a deva. In Sant Bhasha however, Garuda takes on a totally different meaning.

In Sant Bhasha, maya is often referred to as a poisonous snake. Maya, the she snake and its poison is destroyed by Garuda, the natural enemy of all snakes. In Sant Bhasha therefore, Garuda is not regarded as a deva, but becomes a symbol for Shabad.

At Angg 171, Guru Ramdas Ji says even if you make friends with the snake of maya, it will still emit poison.

“Bissiar ko baho dudh pilaaiye bikh nikse folh foolitha.”

The only remedy is the Guru’s Shabad which (like Garuda) destroys the snake and the poison of maya.

“Har Prabh ann milavho Gur Sadhu ghas Shabad Garudh mukh leetha.”

At Angg 986, Guru Arjun Dev says as one recites the Shabad (Garudh), there can be no fear of any snake (maya).

“Garudh mukh nahi sarap traas.”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Maru Solhe at Angg 1028, tells us the world lives in the company of the poisonous snake of maya. Maya creates delusion and duality. It has ruined countless homes.

“Maya bikh bhouyangam naale; ein dubida ghar bahote galle.”

Bhagat Kabir Ji says that the she snake maya is powerful and treacherous. It has deceived even the trinity of senior devas.

“Sarapni te upar nahi balliya; jin Brahma Bissan Mahadeo challiya.” (Angg 481)

In Raag Sarangh M.5 at Angg 1209, Guru Ji says the poison of maya is widespread and I have taken the antidote (Garudarari) of the Guru’s Mantra (i.e. I recite the Guru’s Shabad).

“Deh diss fulh rahi bikhiya bikh Gur Mantar mukh Garudarari.”

At Angg 1260, Raag Malaar M.3, Guru Amardas Ji says haumai (here Guru Ji treats haumai and attachment to maya as synonymous) is the poison, and the Garudh Shabad in the mouth (i.e. by reciting the Shabad) removes the poison of ego.

“Garudh Shabad mukh paaya haumai bikh Har maari.”

In Raag Kanra M.4, Angg 1310, Guru Ramdas Ji says the snakes (of maya) are full of poison – place the antidote Guru Garudh Shabad in your mouth.

“Bissiar bissu bhare hai pooran Gur Garudh Shabad mukh paavegho.”

In Slok Vaaran Tey Vadheek, Angg 1415, Guru Amardas Ji declares that the antidote to the poison of maya is to recite Naam, and this Naam is contained in the Garudh Shabad of the Guru.

“Bikh ko maaran Har Naam hai Gur Garudh Shabad mukh paaye.”

As can be seen, Garuda is used by the Gurus in Sant Bhasha to symbolise Shabad.

It is with this background that one should read the Shabad by Bhagat Namdev Ji at Angg 1166, Raag Bhairo.

The Sultan (Sultan Tugluq) challenges Bhagat Ji to revive a dead cow. The Bhagat refuses and says that can only be done by the Lord if He so wishes. I can do nothing.

“Mera kiya kichu na hoye; kar hai Raam hoye hai soye.”

The Sultan is enraged at what he sees as defiance and says, Namdev Ji will be put to death if he does not bring the cow to life, or accept Islam.

The Bhagat goes into deep prayer. After some time Bhagat Ji describes what he saw:

“Garudh chade Gobind aaiyela”

Again, Bhagat Ji says “Garudh chade aaye Gopal.”

If one reads all 61 Shabads of Bhagat Namdev Ji in SGGS Ji, it becomes clear Bhagat Ji only prayed to Nirankar Ji who is “All Pervading.” Bhagat Ji certainly did not pray to Vishnu to help him. So, when Bhagat Ji says “Garudh chade Gobind aaiyela,” Bhagat Ji means the Lord manifested Himself when the Garudh (Shabad, Bani, Naam) was recited.

Here, Bhagat Ji is using Sant Bhasha to refer to Shabad as Garuda. A cursory reading may give the impression Bhagat was referring to Vishnu on his mount/vehicle, Garuda. But Bhagat Ji is using Divine Poetic Licence to describe the manifestation of the “Rameiya hoya” as His Shabad was recited by the Bhagat.

(Bhagat Naam Dev Ji in Raag Bhairao – 1166) Shabad:

The Sultan said, “Listen, Naam Dayv:

let me see the actions of your Lord.”||1||

The Sultan arrested Naam Dayv,

and said, “Let me see your Beloved Lord.”||1||Pause||

“Bring this dead cow back to life.

Otherwise, I shall cut off your head here and now.”||2||

Naam Dayv answered, “O king, how can this happen?

No one can bring the dead back to life. ||3||

I cannot do anything by my own actions.

Whatever the Lord does, that alone happens.”||4||

The arrogant king was enraged at this reply.

He incited an elephant to attack. ||5||

Naam Dayv’s mother began to cry,

and she said, “Why don’t you abandon your Lord Raam, and worship his Lord Allah?”||6||

(ਮੈਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ—) ਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈਂ;
Naam Dayv answered, “I am not your son, and you are not my mother.

Even if my body dies, I will still sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.”||7||

ਹਾਥੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁੰਡ ਦੀ ਚੋਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਨਾਮਾ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ;
The elephant attacked him with his trunk,

but Naam Dayv was saved, protected by the Lord. ||8||

The king said, “The Qazis and the Mullahs bow down to me,

but this Hindu has trampled my honor.”||9||

The people pleaded with the king, “Hear our prayer, O king.

Here, take Naam Dayvs weight in gold, and release him.”||10||

The king replied, “If I take the gold, then I will be consigned to hell,

by forsaking my faith and gathering worldly wealth.”||11||

With his feet in chains, Naam Dayv kept the beat with his hands,

singing the Praises of the Lord. ||12||

“Even if the Ganges and the Jamunaa rivers flow backwards,

I will still continue singing the Praises of the Lord.”||13||

Three hours passed,

and even then, the Lord of the three worlds had not come. ||14||

Playing on the instrument of the feathered wings,

the Lord of the Universe came, mounted on the eagle garura. ||15||

He cherished His devotee,

and the Lord came, mounted on the eagle garura. ||16||

The Lord said to him, “If you wish, I shall turn the earth sideways.

If you wish, I shall turn it upside down. ||17||

If you wish, I shall bring the dead cow back to life.

Everyone will see and be convinced.”||18||

Naam Dayv prayed, and milked the cow.

He brought the calf to the cow, and milked her. ||19||

When the pitcher was filled with milk,

Naam Dayv took it and placed it before the king. ||20||

The king went into his palace,

and his heart was troubled. ||21||

Through the Qazis and the Mullahs, the king offered his prayer,

“Forgive me, please, O Hindu; I am just a cow before you.”||22||

Naam Dayv said, “Listen, O king:

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਤਸੱਲੀ ਦਿਵਾ ਦੇਹ;
have I done this miracle? ||23||

The purpose of this miracle is

that you, O king, should walk on the path of truth and humility.”||24||

Naam Dayv became famous everywhere for this.

The Hindus all went together to Naam Dayv. ||25||

If the cow had not been revived,

people would have lost faith in Naam Dayv. ||26||

The fame of Naam Dayv spread throughout the world.

ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ;
The humble devotees were saved and carried across with him. ||27||

All sorts of troubles and pains afflicted the slanderer.

There is no difference between Naam Dayv and the Lord. ||28||1||10||
