Man tends to harbour pride in worldly things. Karmic bondages become a whirlpool which sucks you inside into the hands of the merciless jamms. Guru Ji advices we should live with fear of God (i.e. we should be fearful of breaching His Hukam).

The union of mother and father brings the body into being; the Creator inscribes its destiny within the body; according to His Writ, one receives gifts, light (sharpness of mind), and glory; as one mingles with maya, he loses his spiritual awareness.

“Mil maat pita pind kamaaeya; tin Karte lekh likhaeya; likh daat jote vadiayee; mil maya surat gavayee.”

O foolish mind, why are you so proud?; you will have to depart when the Lord so Wills.

“Murakh mann kahe karse maana; uth chalna Khasme bhaana.” (rahao).

Abandon the relishes of worldliness, and find intuitive peace; no one is exempted from leaving this world; use some and save the rest; if you are destined to return to the world again.

“Tajj saad sahaj sukh hoyee; ghar chadney rahe na koyee; kich khaje kich dhar jaaiye; je bahurh duniya aaiye.” (Guru Ji has expressed a similar view at Angg 418.

“je chalda leh chaliya kich sampey naale; ta dhan sancho dekh ke bujho bichare.”)

He adorns his body with silken robes; issues all kinds of commands; prepares a comfortable bed and sleeps; when he is manhandled by the messenger of death (jamms), what good does it do for him to cry out (then)? (In Punjabi it is a common expression to say “haatho payee ho gayee” i.e. hands were laid on each other).

“Sajj kaiyan patt handaye; furmayis bahut chalaiye; kar sejh sukhali sovay; hathi paudi kahe rovay.”

O brothers, the household affairs are like a whirlpool; sinful stone (hearted persons) cannot swim across; let the fear of breaching God’s Hukam be your boat to ferry your soul across; Nanak says, rare are those whom He blesses with such a boat.

“Ghar ghumanvaani bhai; paap pathar taran na jayee; bhao berha jio charahoo; kaho Nanak devhe kahoo.”
