SGGS Ji Ang 398

Guru Ji asks the mortal. O reckless, foolish person, you have forsaken Naam. Why are you asleep (spiritually asleep/unconcerned).?
“Kya sovay Naam vissar gaafal gehliya.”

So many have been swept away by the relentless flow of the river of life (time).
“Kitti eit dariaye vanjan vehdiya.”

The only safe course is to climb the boat of the Lord’s Feet (Naam) with your mann.
“Bohithra Har Charan mann charh langiye.”

Sing His Praises always, and keep company of the holy.
“Aath pahar Gunn gaiye Sadhu sangiye.”

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:

ਕਿਆ ਸੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਗਾਫਲ ਗਹਿਲਿਆ ॥
ਹੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਕਿਉਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
Why are you sleeping, and forgetting the Name, O careless and foolish mortal?

ਕਿਤਂੀ ਇਤੁ ਦਰੀਆਇ ਵੰਞਨਿੑ ਵਹਦਿਆ ॥੧॥p
(ਵੇਖ, ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਇਸ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
So many have been washed away andl carried off by this river of life. ||1||

ਬੋਹਿਥੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਮਨ ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘੀਐ ॥
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਇਕ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹਨ; (ਇਸ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ) ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ) ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ
O mortal, get aboard the boat of the Lord’s Lotus Feet, and cross over.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Twenty-four hours a day, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||Pause||

ਭੋਗਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਅਨੇਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁੰਞਿਆ ॥
(ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
You may enjoy various pleasures, but they are useless without the Name.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਰੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਜੀਵ) ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Without devotion to the Lord, you shall die in sorrow, again and again. ||2||

ਕਪੜ ਭੋਗ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਤਨਿ ਮਰਦਨ ਮਾਲਣਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਵੇਖ, ਜੀਵ (ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਟਣੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਮਲਦੇ ਹਨ
You may dress and eat and apply scented oils to your body,

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਚਾਲਣਾ ॥੩॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁਆਹ (ਸਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
but without the meditative remembrance of the Lord, your body shall surely turn to dust, and you shall have to depart. ||3||

ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਪੇਖਿਆ ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-(ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਬੜਾ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਹੈ,
How very treacherous is this world-ocean; how very few realize this!

ਛੂਟਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖਿਆ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੧੦॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚਾਉ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਓਹੀ ਬਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।੪।੮।੧੧੦।
Salvation rests in the Lord’s Sanctuary; O Nanak, this is your pre-ordained destiny. ||4||8||110||
