SGGS Ji Ang 156

Guru Ji tells us human life is precious. It is a rare chance to Unite with God who resides within our bodies.

The only way to reach Him is through Naam. Foolish man spends his life asleep at night, and gorges on worldly tastes when awake.
“Rehn gavaiyee soye ke diwas gavaiya khaye.”

Life is like a precious diamond but it is spent in the chase of mere shells (kaudi)
“Hire jaisa janam hai kaudi badle jaaye.”

Guru Ji scolds the mortal. O foolish man you have not known the Lord’s Name; later, you will deeply regret this.
“Naam na jaaniya Raam ka; murhe firh pache pechtaye re.”

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
Gauree Bairaagan, First Mehla:

ਰੈਣਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਸੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ !) ਤੂੰ ਰਾਤ ਸੌਂ ਕੇ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਖਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਬਿਤਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating.

ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੀਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਹੀਨ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਕੌਡੀ ਦੇ ਭਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ,
You do not know the Name of the Lord.

ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
(ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਉਮਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਲੰਘ ਗਈ, ਤਾਂ) ਮੁੜ ਸਮਾ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ
You fool – you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause||

ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਧਨ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।
You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary?

ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਭੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨।
Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2||

ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
(ਪਰ) ਜੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ । ਭਾਵੇਂ ਜੀਕਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ) ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਕਰੇ,
If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.

ਕਰਮਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ । ਸੋ, ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਨਾਹ ਭਟਕੋ) ।੩।
According to the karma of past actions, one’s destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! (ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਹੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ । ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ । ਉੱਦਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
O Nanak, the One who created the creation – He alone takes care of it.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੮॥
(ਉੱਦਮ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਬਾਰੇ) ਉਸ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ) ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਖਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ । ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੋ) ।੪।੧।੧੮।
The Hukam of our Lord and Master’s Command cannot be known; He Himself blesses us with greatness. ||4||1||18||
