Raag Sorath M.5.

The Janamsakhis say Mehta Kalu Ji advised Guru Nanak Dev Ji to engage in some business activity. Many scholars however do not treat the janamsakhis as authentic.

The sakhis say Mehta Ji first said why not take up farming? The answer was farming of the mind gives best profit. Worldly riches do not go with you.

“Baba maya saath na hoye”

It was suggested that Guru Ji become a shopkeeper. Again the reply was
“Haan hatt kar arjaa Sach Naam kar vath”
Let your daily decreasing age be your shop and Truth your merchandise.

Thirdly, it was suggested why not trade in horses. Be a merchant. The answer was the best trade is to heed the words of the Scriptures and trade in horses of Truth.

Finally, it was suggested why not seek employment with someone. The answer was focusing your consciousness is the best occupation and engaging your mind in Naam is the True employment.

The sakhi is given for illustration only. The Shabad itself is Infinite and applies always in every situation.
