Bhagat Sheikh Fareed Ji in Slok Fareed Jee – SGGS Ji Ang 1378

Slok no. 9

Bhagat Ji says, as I peer into my life, I find my death looms near (agho nehra aaya), whilst my strength and youth seems so distant and far in the past. (picha rehya duur).

Fareed, see what has happened; your beard has become grey and sparse. (Dekh Fareeda jo thiaa dahri hoyi bhoor).

Fareeda, if you have wisdom (akal lateef), you would not write about the evil others do (kaale likh na lekh); instead, you should peer deep within yourself (apnrhe giriwan meh) and look with shame upon your own deeds (sirh neeva kar dekh).

(Fareeda jo teh maaran mukiya tinna na maare ghom) O Fareeda, those who hit you, do not act instinctively and return the blow.

Go home in peace and kiss the feet of the misguided one who struck you, i.e. live in humility and be quick to forgive those who wrong you.  (aapnehre ghar jaaiye pair tinna de chom).

See, Fareed, what has happened: your beard has become grey.

That which is coming is near, and the past is left far behind. ||9||
