 Bhai Gurdas Ji’s Vaaran

Bhai Gurdas Ji (1551-1636) was the first cousin of Mata Ganga Ji, wife of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.
His father Bhai Ishar Das was the youngest brother of Guru Amardas Ji.

Bhai Gurdas Ji was appointed the 1st Jathedar of Akal Takht by Guru Hargobind Ji

Earlier, from 1602 till 1604, Bhai Gurdas was the scribe for Pothi Sahib as the Bani was dictated to him by Guru Arjun Dev Ji.

Bhai Gurdas has 40 Vaaran of varying length. This is a pauri from his 1st Vaar which briefly tells us about Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s udasi to Mecca, Medina and Baghdad.

ਪਉੜੀ ੩੫ : ਬਗਦਾਦ-ਗਮਨ
Going to Baghdad

ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਬਾ ਗਇਆ ਬਗਦਾਦਿ ਨੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੀਆ ਅਸਥਾਨਾ।
From Mecca Baba went to Baghdad and stayed outside the city.

ਇਕੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਅਕਾਲ ਰੂਪੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਰਬਾਬੀ ਮਰਦਾਨਾ।
Firstly, Baba himself was in the form of Timeless and secondly, he had his companion Mardana, the rebeck player.

ਦਿਤੀ ਬਾਂਗਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਹੋਆ ਜਹਾਨਾ।
For namaz (in his own style), Baba gave call, listening to which the whole world went into absolute silence.

ਸੁੰਨ ਮੁੰਨਿ ਨਗਰੀ ਭਈ ਦੇਖਿ ਪੀਰ ਭਇਆ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ।
The whole city became quiet and lo! to behold it, the pir (of the town) also got wonderstruck.

ਵੇਖੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਲਗਾਇ ਕਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਫਕੀਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਮਸਤਾਨਾ।
Observing minutely he found (in the form of Baba Nanak) an exhilerated faquir.

ਪੁਛਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੈ ਦਸਤਗੀਰ ਕਉਣ ਫਕੀਰੁ ਕਿਸ ਕਾ ਘਰਿਆਨਾ।
Pir Dastegir asked him, which category of faquir you belong to and what is your parentage.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਬੁ ਫਕੀਰੁ ਇਕੋ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਾ।
(Mardana told) He is Nanak, who has come into kaliyug, and, he recognises God and His faquirs as one.

ਧਰਤਿ ਆਕਾਸ ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੩੫॥
He is known in all the directions besides earth and sky.
