KANREH KI VAAR M4

SGGS Ang 1312-1318

KANREH Ki Vaar is the final Vaar of the 22 Vaars in SGGS Ji. This Vaar has the instruction inscribed upon it that it is to be sung to the dhuni of Musse Ki Vaar.

Musa was a brave Pathan. He was an expert horseman and warrior. He owned large tracts of land. He was engaged to a pretty daughter from a noble family. Just before his marriage, some malicious rumors were spread about him by jealous persons. It was said that Musa was cowardly and untrustworthy.

The girl’s parents believed the rumors, broke off her engagement with Musa and she was married off to another Pathan.

Musa felt insulted as he knew the stories about him were untrue. His close friends taunted him and insulted his masculinity.

Musa attacked the new bridegroom and his bride. He captured them and held them prisoners. He challenged anyone to a fight if they wanted to release the prisoners. No one dared to challenge him.

Musa then questioned the new bride as to whom she would choose to live with. She said since she was already married, she chose to live with her husband. Musa was touched by her integrity. He released her and blessed both her husband and his bride.

The minstrels wrote an ode to his decent nature, his magnanimity and honorable act. That Ode has a particular folk tune, a dhuni. Kanreh Ki Vaar M.4, is to be sung to that particular dhuni, that folk tune.

Kanreh Ki Vaar has 15 pauris and 30 Sloks. All are by Guru Ramdas Ji. The signature “Nanak” appears at Pauris 5, 10 and 15. Hence, the Vaar is divided broadly into 3 different sections.

The 1st part of the Vaar with the Sloks up to Pauri no. 5, stresses that Naam is the True Treasure and Naam from a  Satguru is the only way to union with God.

The 2nd part of the Vaar from Pauris nos. 6 to 10, tells us God is Agam Agochar, Unfathomable and cannot be reached by physical means. He can only be accessed by Naam, Love and the Guru’s Grace.

The 3rd part, from Pauris nos. 11-15 emphasises that the union with God is internal as a gurmukh, with the Guru’s Grace.

IN Slok no. 1 (Pauri no. 1 (P.1) Guru Ji advises the Sikh – Naam is the only True, Everlasting Treasure and you should enshrine it in your heart.

Follow the Guru’s Teachings, and enshrine the Treasure of the Lord’s Name within your heart.

Become the slave of the Lord’s slaves, and conquer egotism and corruption.

Blessed, blessed and very fortunate are those, O Nanak, who savor the Sublime Essence of the Lord through the Guru’s Teachings. ||1||”

IN Slok no. 2 (P.1) Guru Ji stresses that Naam consists of Gunn, Attributes of God and God Himself is the Enlightener and Treasure of all Gunn.

O Nanak, the Guru is the Lord God, the Lord of the Universe; meeting Him, you shall obtain the Name of the Lord. ||2||”

ALL Sloks are in the form of Advice by the Guru to all Sikhs. The Pauris are in the form of a personal Ardas to God by an enlightened Sikh. The Pauris contain Praises of God and repeatedly say God is indeed Everything.

Thus, Pauri no.1 says God, You are the Master and the Student too. You are the Experience and the Person who Experiences the Sensation. You are the Real Doer and whatever You do, comes to pass. Blessed, Blessed, Blessed is the satsanggat where your Name is sung. All are encouraged to gather and sing the Lord’s Praises, and such singing will erase all your sins.

Let everyone proclaim: Blessed is the Guru, the True Guru, the Guru, the True Guru; meeting Him, the Lord covers their faults and deficiencies. ||7||”

SLOK no. 1 (P.8) says the saints are like blessed pools, full to the brim. They are most blessed as they believe in the Satguru (Shabad).

The sacred pool of devotional worship is filled to the brim and overflowing in torrents.

O servant Nanak, the Lord God is Inaccessible; the Lord has attached me to His Robe, and united me in His Union. ||2||”

PAURI no. 8 says God is Inaccessible and Unfathomable. How does one then get His Darshan? Go to satsanggat, school yourself in His Gunn. Blessed is the tongue, the hands, the Learned Satguru. Meeting the Satguru (Shabad) one’s blessed destiny is written.

O Nanak, chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, all poverty and pain is dispelled. ||2||”

PAURI no. 9 speaks of the blessed one who receives Darshan of the Satguru (Shabad,  Jote). One should sing praises of the Lord, the Most Powerful. The saints receive the profits of singing His praises.

I am a sacrifice, forever and ever, to those who have seen my Beloved True Guru.

Through the Perfect Guru, He is revealed, O Nanak, and one is lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||2||”

PAURI no. 10 speaks of the auspicious, blessed moment when your sewa becomes pleasing to the Lord. In answer to the question –  how can I attain the Lord and see Him, the Lord who is All Knowing and All Seeing? Guru Ji answers – it is Gurbani  which will lead to union and Darshan of the Lord.

Blessed, blessed, beauteous and fruitful is that moment, when service to the Lord becomes pleasing to the mind.

Nanak is a sacrifice unto those who meditate on the Lord of Nirvaanaa. ||10||”

THIS is the end of the 2nd part of the Vaar; the signature “Nanak” is used in Pauri no. 10.

In the 3rd part of the Vaar from Pauris nos. 11-15, the focus is on the inner journey, the love, humility, sahaj and the other Gunn of God which leads to Union with the Divine One.

IN Slok no. 1 (P.11), Guru Ji says you need Guru’s Teachings (Bani) to anoint your inner eyes with enlightenment. This leads to a calm and unfilled mind and union with the Lord.

IN Pauri no. 11, Guru Ji speaks to God. Lord, You created all and control all creation. The manmukhs are led to ruin, while some are united with the Guru and they succeed. All should serve the Wondrous Lord, who entices the mind and is the Creator and controls the entire world.
