Question from a satsanggi:

Is there a Shabad in Gurbani which divides the day into parts and encourages us to jaap at a specific time?

Amrit Vela

Gurbani says you must remember Him lovingly “aath pahar” i.e. always.
Before you can do that (with the Guru’s grace of course), Gurbani speaks of a progression in avastha.
 You start with amrit vela.
There are many shabads on this:

  1. SGGS Ang 145. M.1. “Sabahi salah jinni dhiaya ek man…” (those who praise the Lord in the early hours of the morning and meditate on Him single-mindedly.)

  2. SGGS Ang 146. M.2. “Athi pahari ath khand naava khand sareer..” (Twenty four hours a day, destory the eight things, and in the ninth place, conquer the body).

The Sikhs of Agra where Bhai Gurdas had been sent to do parchaar by Guru Ramdas Ji wanted the definition of a Sikh. Bhai ji asked Guru Ji to describe a Sikh. Guru Ji replied with a Shabad at Ang 305

“Gur Satgur ka jo Sikh akhae so bhalkay uth Har naam dhiavay  …” (One who calls himself the Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord’s Name).

The Shabad later says

“firr chaday divass gurbani gaavai bahdia uthdiaa har naam dhiaavai” (then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani, whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord’s Name). i.e all the earlier instruction is before din charda.

Gurfateh.
